3Ds max introductory tutorial: creating snow

Recommendation: NSDT scene editor helps you quickly build 3D application scenes that can be redeveloped

In this tutorial you will learn to create a snow field in 3ds Max 9. In this tutorial we'll use some primitive planes, particle systems and textures and see how effective and realistic scenes you can make out of them.

Ok, first draw a plane in the top view, set the parameters to height*width of 15x15cm (I manually changed these units to centimeters from the custom >> unit settings) and length segment=500, width segment=500.

Now we have to make a texture in Photoshop that converts the plane to snow, for this I created a texture as shown below.

Set the foreground and background colors as follows...

Open a new file, set the file size to 40x40cm, go to Filter >> Render >> Cloud, now you will get the result like this...

When you get the above result, use the Smudge Tool (Intensity = 100%) to paint over the image as shown below.

Using Curves darkens the image as shown below...

and save it as snowfield.jpg, now duplicate the same image and add noise and desaturate it as shown below.

Save it as NoiseSnowwave.jpg.

Go to 3ds max, select the plane we drew at the beginning >> add a displacement modifier to it

In the Displacement modifier's parameters, add the snowfield.jpg image above in a Bitmap and set the Strength to 0.05cm as shown below.

Now, suppose you get the following result....

I want to add a little noise to it so it looks uneven and natural. To this I added another Displace modifier with the noisesnowland.jpg image and set the Intensity to 0.01cm.

Now, you get the following result.

Now in the material editor, set the values and colors as follows.

Apply a material to a plane and view the result

Now set a plane in the back ground for sky as follows…

Set target camera in such a way that the scene can look as follows….

The horizon doesn't seem natural, because a couple of mountains have been added over there, made with planes and displacement modifiers: like snow fields. And also add some houses in the distance so that the scene looks habitable.

Now, let's add some snowfall.

Go to Create >> Particles >> PCloud

Draw PCloud on snow field in top view

Set the Pcloud parameters as follows

Finally add a noise material to the particles and lower the opacity to 30.

Now, the scene should look like this...

Finally add motion blur to the particles. To do this, select the PCloud parcticles in the viewport, then right click and go to Object Properties. In the object properties, enable the Motion Blur option and select Object as shown below.

That's it.

This is the final image you get.
