Today (September 15), the winners of the 2022 "Scientific Exploration Award" were announced, and Professor Fan Zhiyong of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology was shortlisted for the "Cross Frontier" field list.

The "Scientific Exploration Award" is a public welfare award led by scientists, and it is currently one of the highest funding programs for young scientific and technological talents in China. This year, the "Scientific Exploration Award" judges selected 50 candidates in 10 fields including mathematical physics, new chemical materials, astronomy and geosciences, life sciences, medical sciences, information electronics, energy and environment, advanced manufacturing, transportation and architecture, and cutting-edge crossovers Young and middle-aged scientists under the age of 45 will be funded.

Professor Fan Zhiyong is currently a professor of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, director of the Smart Sensor and Environmental Technology Center, director of the Shenzhen Clean Energy and Environmental Sensor Technology Laboratory, director of graduate affairs for the Electronic and Computer Engineering Program, and Deputy Director of Materials Characterization and Preparation Facility, Founding Member of Hong Kong Academy of Young Sciences.

Professor Fan received his undergraduate and master's degrees in materials science from Fudan University in 1998 and 2001, and his doctorate in materials science from the University of California, Irvine in 2006. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at UC Berkeley and a postdoctoral researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Professor Fan's research interests focus on micro-nano electronics and optoelectronic devices, bionic devices. So far, he has published more than 200 academic papers in journals such as Nature, Nature Materials, Nature Photonics, Nature Communications, Science Advances, etc., with ~23,000 citations, an H index of 80, and 30 Chinese and US patents.
