Zephix 7 released, a distribution based on the Debian stable branch

Zephix is a real-time Linux operating system based on Debian stable version. It can be run entirely from removable media without touching any files stored on the user's system disk. The purpose of Zephix is to provide a free, modular operating system that users can take with them and use wherever they have a laptop or desktop system.

The minimum system requirements to run Zephix are a 1GHz Pentium processor and 1.5GB of RAM, although better specs are recommended for a faster and smoother real-time system experience with Zephix.

Zephix v7 (Zephix-7R-x86_64) was released last month and contains a number of breaking changes:

  • The underlying system is upgraded to Debian 12.1
  • Extensive redesign of module creation and operation scripts
  • Rename script for better convention
  • Added 3 new scripts - creating a custom core module, merging 2 modules together, and extending swap space when building large modules
  • Added default behavior to automatically move newly created modules to the correct location
  • Further eliminates unnecessary bloat in final ISO, reducing size to 380MB
  • Removed the firmware module and introduced a tool called isenkram which provides isenkram-autoinstall-firmware (this can be used with a USB network share to install required missing firmware)
  • Removed traditional desktop modules and provided (7) pre-built desktop modules (Cinnamon, GNOME, KDE, LXDE, LXQt, MATE, Xfce) to allow greater freedom of choice
  • Add bc, rsync and ifrename tools
  • Update the official website to reflect all these changes and provide more information
