1. Foreword

2022 is finally over and we are coming out of three difficult years of COVID. The new year's "China Open Source Annual Report" is once again presented in front of friends as scheduled, and it's time for everything to be ready, except for the "preface". Looking back at the foreword of the report written in the past few years, reading the content of the report to be released, sorting out the major events and personal mental journey of the past year, what can we talk about about the "annual report"?

About "Upheaval"

In the 2020 report, I wrote: "Maybe many years later, when we look back at 2020, we will call it: the beginning of the world's drastic changes." In the 2021 report, I also wrote: "The world Great changes are taking place, and the world we live in is heading in an unknown direction at high speed." In 2022, what changes can we see? The trend of drastic changes in the world will not come without warning. What trends can we see? What guesses can we make about unknown directions?

A phenomenon that may require attention is that while technology, software, and open source are driving changes in the world, they themselves are also being changed by the world. Open source, is entering the next stage of development. The era of open source individual heroism is nearing twilight, and open source led by large companies and foundations is becoming a reality. Readers can see the clues in the "Annual Report" of the past few years.

About "production"

The production of agricultural society is nothing more than waiting for (helping) the growth of animals and plants. Production in industrial society has become very large, sophisticated, and complex, but it is still visible and tangible after all. In the digital world, in the network composed of 0 and 1, production, innovation, collaboration, and win-win need to be redefined. Costs, profits, and market share also need to be recalculated. ——This is still the trend that has emerged in the past 20 years.

By 2022, we have seen ChatGPT, AIGC, and the intervention and assistance of AI in various production links. Production needs to be redefined again!

In such a process, what will happen to open source?

About "responsibility"

Another major event in 2022 is the various chain reactions on a global scale triggered by the Russia-Ukraine war, which cannot be avoided even in the open source community. In the process of discussing with friends recently, I expressed an opinion: "We need to understand the real open source world before we can think rationally about how to face the real open source world?", "Any exaggerated risk of listening to the wind is rain, or It is irresponsible to ignore risks in a deceitful way."

As a responsible open source person, we need to try our best to know and understand the real open source world, and do our best to push the open source world in a good direction, or at least prevent it from slipping in a worse direction. With this in mind, let us greet the new year!

2. Overall overview of the report

The 2022 China Open Source Annual Report is mainly composed of four parts, namely Chronicle of Events, Data, Commercialization and Questionnaire.

1. Memorabilia

For the open source events in 2022, we have collected and sorted nearly 300 open source related news reports, and encountered many challenges: first, classification: so many events, how should they be classified, some events seem to be regarded as both community events and commercial events , and it is also related to open source security, so what should I do?

The second is the trade-off: what counts as a big event? With so many open source-related investments every year, how much investment is worth paying attention to? Cause a lot of discussion? Is the impact on the world important, or should more attention be paid to the impact on China?

Finally, a summary: When we try to look at these current stories from a historical perspective, which ones are trends worthy of attention, and which ones may be just a moment of excitement?

The content of the memorabilia part of the report is an annual summary that we try to make by dividing the major events of the year into five parts: "open source business, open source security, open source technology, open source law, and open source community & ecology".

2. Data

The data chapter of this report is jointly produced by X-lab open laboratory, Apache Devlake community and Gitee, and is divided into GitHub chapter and Gitee chapter.

The GitHub data chapter is divided into two parts: macro insight and project insight. The macro insight article explores the global log data of GitHub in 2022. At the same time, we use OpenDigger's indicators and labeled data to analyze from various aspects. In this chapter, projects are evaluated according to the OpenRank indicators proposed by the X-lab open laboratory to obtain a subdivided list, including the ranking of open source projects worldwide, the ranking of open source projects in China, the ranking of Chinese developers, and the ranking of foundations. Rankings of Chinese companies, rankings in technical fields, and rankings in project fields. Project Insights uses the Apache DevLake tool to conduct deeper insights into the selected projects on the list. Insights include indicators such as project robot usage, community growth, and problem feedback, as well as the working hours of each community. distribution, and provides indicators such as project code comment coverage, static test coverage, and code reuse from a lower level.

The Gitee chapter conducts a statistical analysis of open source projects hosted on Gitee, sorts out and interprets the changing trends of programming languages and function distribution, and analyzes the situation of developers participating in open source in Gitee, in order to provide a basis for observing the evolution of domestic open source. View of "local platform".

3. Commercialization

In last year’s open source annual report on commercialization, it introduced the underlying driving factors for commercial success of open source software, possible commercialization paths of open source software companies, criteria for judging investors of open source projects, and case sharing. Overall, it traces the commercial development of open source projects from the birth of the word Open Source in 1998 to last year, which has aroused heated discussions among many open source partners.

On this basis, this year's chapter on commercialization will focus on discussing with readers some trends and changes in the current market environment. It is not difficult to find that with the accumulation and vigorous development of domestic open source projects, many projects have begun to have global influence and global vision. In such an era, in the commercial development of open source projects, how to better grasp global opportunities, cope with common challenges, and promote the global market of open source software has become a topic worthy of research and discussion.

At the same time, on the basis of last year's commercialization chapter, combined with the current downward trend of the overall economy, this year's commercialization once again digs into the driving factors of open source commercialization and analyzes the sentiment of the capital market for open source projects this year. Potential to help open source projects and capital markets build a bridge for information exchange.

The content of this chapter is written by the investment team of Yunqi Capital. The main contents include:

  • The commercialization of open source software is not as good as the exploration stage of globalization
  • Drivers of Open Source Commercialization
  • Open Source Project Capital Market Situation

4. Questionnaire

Since Kaiyuanshe released the "2015 China Open Source Community Participation Survey Report" in 2016, it has conducted surveys on developers every year. This year we set off again, combining data analysis methods and survey reports to draw a map of China's open source world in 2022. The questionnaire is launched from two perspectives, including personal information (including work information and developer technical information) and participation in the open source community. This year's questionnaire has been greatly upgraded compared with previous years. We conducted the survey from the perspective of the role in the open source community, and added topics related to open source community measurement and open source commercialization. We hope to restore the true status quo of the current Chinese open source community, so as to provide an authoritative reference for future generations of open source.

The following are some results of the questionnaire:

3. Thanks
