Development of the Filecoin network

Lotus will release v1.4.1 later this week. This will be an optional version that includes some features. Some of the upcoming features include:

  1. Add SectorTerminate/SectorTerminateFlush to terminate local (delete sectors from storage) and sectors on the chain;
  2. Increase the speed of multi-core AddPiece CommP by 7.67 times (#5320);
  3. Improve user experience and error messages regarding withdrawal of funds from the market balance (#5303);
  4. Ability to add funds to the market balance for multiple transactions to save Gas costs (#5125).

In addition to the optional upgrade version mentioned above, the Filecoin team is also planning a mandatory upgrade version in the future, which is estimated to be released between January and February. Regarding this version, it will integrate proof v6.0.0 and spec-actor v3. It also includes some new features and improvements in Lotus, such as the smarter publish storage deals mechanism for storage miners, and allows msig wallet to become the owner address of the miner .

The official also released a dedicated contribution guide for the Lotus repo, allowing more technical experts to participate and contribute more code.

The spec-actor team is preparing the v3 version, which integrates v3 AMT/HAMT improvements, with better performance and security. Another new feature is to support non-chain window PoSt verification , that is, to optimistically accept on-chain window PoSt proofs without verification, and allow them to be disputed by off-chain verifiers in the future. With this FIP, the cheaper SubmitWindowedPoSt message can be used for a long time, and the synchronization speed will be faster.

After the v6.0.0 release, the verification team has been working on some general improvements and code cleanups. The team is currently developing a pure OpenCL hashing algorithm, which can provide almost twice the performance increase and significantly reduce GPU memory usage. The team is also studying ZCash's Halo2 and exploring the possibility of using it for next-generation snark proofs.

Filecoin ecosystem

In December of last year, Fenbushi Capital and Protocol Lab reached a cooperation. Fenbushi Capital injected a total of 15 million US dollars into the IPFS and Filecoin ecosystem, and is committed to accelerating the development of the Filecoin ecosystem and promoting the commercialization of Filecoin faster.

In 2021, Filecoin is officially expected to promote and develop more practical applications. An excellent example of this is liverpeer's file.video, which is used to store human information. In addition, the Filecoin Dev Grant proposal for Wave 6 will be submitted for priority consideration at 23:59 PDT on January 15. However, if the budget allows, the proposals will continue to be reviewed throughout the quarter. Visit filecoin.io/grants to apply. There are also RFPs for miner support tools, storage clients and chain analysis tools, or suggest your own project!

About the Filecoin community

As early as December last year, the official team announced a Filecoin MinerX reward project. It aims to attract more small and medium-sized miners. Together, they will build a reliable storage foundation for the establishment of global distributed storage, and through real Customer transaction scenarios help improve the miners' experience. The official team is currently determining the list of research institutes and applications, and the matter will start in the next few weeks.

Finally, I am very happy to see more and more Filecoin + notarization projects and FIP community participation and governance, and all kinds of questions and suggestions are also welcome!

Interstellar original community summary (too long to read the version), the official open letter mainly introduces a few things:

  1. Two versions of Lotus will be released soon, one is a non-mandatory upgrade and the other is a mandatory upgrade version;
  2. Publish a contribution guide for Lotus repo to allow more participants to contribute code;
  3. Continue to promote the development of the Filecoin ecosystem, develop and mine more innovative applications;
  4. Promoting the Filecoin MinerX rewards project, the list of researchers and applicants is being determined.
