The Rust 2022 Annual Survey launched last year by the Rust Foundation has finally released its report.
Participation
The questionnaire received a total of 11,482 responses, of which 9,433 completed all questions.
The questionnaire was available in 11 languages, of which 77% of the respondents used English and 6% used Chinese (both simplified and traditional). Developers who participated in the survey came from all over the world, with the United States (25%) leading the way, followed by Germany (12%) and China (7%).
The vast majority of respondents said they were most comfortable communicating on technical topics in English (93%), followed by Chinese (7%).
Rust usage
More than 90% of respondents said they were Rust users, and 47% of them use Rust on a daily basis, a 4% increase from the previous year.
30% of respondents can write simple programs in Rust, 27% can write code for production environments, and 42% believe that using Rust can improve productivity.
Of those who completed all survey questions, 30% cited "difficulty learning" as the main reason for giving up on Rust, while nearly 47% cited "factors beyond their control."
Rust at work
29.7% of respondents said they use Rust for the majority of their coding at work, an increase of 51.8% compared to the previous year.
In addition, Rust is increasingly being used in professional scenarios. The main reasons respondents indicated for using Rust include:
- Ability to write "bug-free" software (86%)
- Excellent performance in Rust (84%)
- Rust's safety and reliability guarantees (69%)
A further 76% of respondents said they use Rust because they find it fun and enjoyable.
Concerns and expectations for the future of Rust
26% of respondents are concerned that Rust developers and maintainers are not being properly supported, which is down more than 30% from last year.
38% are concerned that Rust is "getting too complex", with only a minority concerned about issues such as documentation, corporate intervention, or speed of evolution. 34% of respondents are not worried about the future of Rust at all.
Concerns about the adoption of Rust in the industry have also dropped by 21% compared to last year, indicating more confidence in Rust's lasting development and versatility.
