Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Beta Released

Canonical has recently released a beta version of the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish) operating system, giving the community an early taste of upcoming features and changes. Note that the beta version is mainly for testing and should not be used in your production system.

Updates for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Beta include:

accent color

While most other Ubuntu-based Linux distributions offer the ability to set accent colors, Ubuntu hasn't offered this feature until now.

Now, in Ubuntu 22.04, you can easily set an accent color of your choice, which affects folders, notification areas, and other desktop elements.

GNOME 42

GNOME 42 brings visual changes, refinements to GNOME applications, and a new screenshot application.

The experience of turning dark mode on or off will be improved, and the system-wide dark mode implementation will be upgraded with GNOME 42.

Snap version of Firefox

Firefox's transition from deb to Snap has been going on for a while. In Ubuntu 22.04, Firefox will now default to Snap packages, and Mozilla aims to push faster security updates and ensure cross-distro support without having to maintain a lot of stuff.

Improved support for Raspberry Pi

With the introduction of zswap in the new system, the performance of the Raspberry Pi should be significantly improved in Ubuntu 22.04. It even runs on a 2GB Raspberry Pi 4.

Linux Kernel 5.15 LTS

Linux Kernel 5.15 LTS is a major upgrade with improved NTFS drivers, initial support for upcoming Intel discrete graphics cards, and many performance improvements.

Live Image for RISC-V

Starting with Ubuntu 22.04, Canonical will provide a separate Live Image of the RISC-V architecture.

other changes

In addition to the major changes mentioned above, some other important changes after the upgrade include:

  • Improved installer with better user experience
  • Updated packages such as OpenSSL 3.0, Ruby 3.0, Python 3.10, PHP 8.1, etc.
