Ubuntu MATE 22.04 Beta has been released recently, and through this Beta version, users can see the latest changes in Ubuntu MATE and what is being tried. According to the development plan, the stable version will be released at the end of April.

MATE Desktop 1.26.1
Ubuntu MATE 22.04 has MATE Desktop 1.26.1. MATE Desktop 1.26.0 fixes a lot of bugs, optimizes performance, and resolves memory leaks. Also fixed issues with Plank and Brisk Menu and screen readers during installation.
Yaru
Ubuntu MATE 21.04 is the first release with a Yaru theme. A year later, the team brought full MATE compatibility to Yaru upstream.
Yaru theme in Ubuntu MATE 22.04
All Yaru themes are included in Ubuntu MATE 22.04, the traditional Ambiant/Radiant themes and MATE Desktop themes are no longer installed by default. The new version adds an automatic settings migration feature to transition upgraded users to the appropriate Yaru MATE theme.
dark/light
In collaboration with the Yaru team and the Ubuntu Desktop team, the team added dark/light panels and panel icons to Yaru and Unity for MATE Desktop.
The new version adds a patch to the Appearance Control Center to apply theme changes to Plank (Dock), Pluma (text editor) and to correctly toggle color scheme preferences for GNOME 42 applications. When you choose a dark theme, everything will be uniformly dark and vice versa.
AI generated wallpaper
The new version has included the 3 most voted "Jammy Jellyfish" wallpaper selections, as the lively and vibrant style of these wallpapers complements the Yaru accent color theme option.
