Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS Beta Released

Pop!_OS for System 76 is based on Ubuntu, and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is coming soon. Following the release schedule, the Beta ISO of Pop!_OS 22.04 is now available for download and testing on GitHub. The beta version is currently not stable and is not recommended for use in production environments, but users can learn about new features in advance.

The main highlight of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is GNOME 42, and unsurprisingly, the Cosmic desktop in Pop!_OS 22.04 is also GNOME 42 at its core, but it has been heavily trimmed to conform to the principles of the Cosmic desktop.

Files 42 looks almost the same as the previous version. But Files 42 has all the core features, such as: new icons for the Files 42 app itself, tight spacing for widgets and a new menu. However, Files 42 in the Cosmic desktop still retains its own folder icons and colors.

In addition, the newly designed dark/light theme support and automatic wallpaper replacement function have not been added to Pop!_OS 22.04. Because Pop!_OS has support for dark/light themes since the birth of the Cosmic desktop.

Another key application, GNOME Setting (gnome-control-center), remains at version 41.1, as GNOME Setting 42 is complex in the transition to libadwaita and GTK4 and has many features, but some features of this version have passed Different ways are built into Pop!_OS. So the Pop!_OS team didn't upgrade it in this release.

A summary of the changes to the application and its version is as follows:

  • Based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

  • GNOME Shell 42
