Ubuntu 18.04 LTS / 19.10 升级 到 Ubuntu 20.04 beta

The Ubuntu 20.04 LTS version was released in less than a month. Ubuntu has made major changes to the visual effects in this version, and it has also improved in performance.

You can download the daily build (daily build) version and reinstall it. If you are using Ubuntu 18.04 or Ubuntu 19.10, you can also directly upgrade to the Ubuntu 20.04 beta version based on the existing system.

It is very convenient to upgrade from an existing system, because you will not lose system settings and other files. Unlike reinstallation, you do not need to reinstall all software from scratch. When you switch to the new version, your home directory, applications (most of them), and files will remain the same.

Frequently asked questions about upgrading to Ubuntu beta.

  • The version upgrade process is not complicated, but a good network connection is required throughout the process to download up to several GB of data.

  • During the version upgrade process, third-party repositories (such as the PPAs you added yourself) will be disabled. Some PPAs may also be incompatible with the new version. After the version upgrade is complete, you can manually enable these PPAs.

  • It is strongly recommended to back up important data to an external USB hard disk. You only need to copy the important files in each directory directly to the external USB hard disk to save.

  • After upgrading to the new version, you cannot roll back to the previous version. If you need the old version of the system, you can only install it again.

  • If you choose to upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04 beta version, you do not need to reinstall after the final stable version of Ubuntu 20.04 is released. Just keep the Ubuntu system updated regularly, and you will be able to use the final stable version by then.

  • Ubuntu 16.04 / 17/18 / 19.04 cannot be directly upgraded to Ubuntu 20.04.

apt full-upgrade Or  apt dist-upgrade functions and  apt upgrade roughly the same, but the version of the system upgrade, apt full-upgrade will be removed software currently installed off in case of need.

After the update installation is complete, the system may need to be restarted. After restarting, you can proceed to step 3.

Step 3: Use the update manager to find the development version

All the necessary updates have been installed in step 2, now open the update manager with the following command, where the  -d parameter indicates that you need to find the development version:

The whole process may take several minutes, and then a new version of Ubuntu will be available:

The entire upgrade process usually takes several hours, but it mainly depends on the actual network speed. After the upgrade is complete, the system will prompt you to restart.
