New features in 18.04
Linux kernel 4.15
Ubuntu 18.04 ships with Linux kernel v4.15, which includes some new features such as:
cgroup v2
AMD Secure Memory Encryption
Latest MD driver
Improvements to SATA Link Power Management
OpenJDK
Ubuntu 18.04 currently uses OpenJDK 10 as the default JRE/JDK. After Oracle releases OpenJDK 11 in September, 18.04 will also be updated synchronously.
security improvements
Ubuntu 18.04 LTS makes gcc the default compiled application to use Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) more efficiently. With a few exceptions, all major packages have been rebuilt to take advantage of this feature.
system update
Python 2 is no longer installed by default. It's still included, but Ubuntu 18.04 will be the last LTS to include Python 2. Python 3 has been updated to 3.6.
Ubuntu Desktop
The default display service of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS is X.Org. Wayland, which has been very popular before, will serve as a Technical Preview (toggle selection on the login screen) and is expected to become the default display server in 20.04 LTS.
