Linux Lite 5.0 RC1 released, novice friendly Linux distribution

The first candidate version of Linux Lite 5.0 is now available and it is based on the latest Ubuntu 20.04. Also included are Linux kernel 5.4.0, Gimp 2.10.18, Thunderbird 68.7.0, Firefox 75.0, and VLC 3.0.9.

"Linux Lite 5.0 RC1 can now be tested. This is by far the most feature-rich and complete version of Linux Lite. This is also the version that many people have been waiting for. For details, see below.

Variety:

  • UEFI supports out of the box.
  • No hidden telemetry
  • Integrity check during real-time boot (Ubuntu implementation) Crtl + C cancel check
  • GUFW has been replaced by the highly configurable FireWallD
  • New updater notification program
  • The latest WhiskerMenu has a new default order ("Install Update" is now at the top of "Favorites")
  • Mousepad instead of Leafpad
  • Paint is now added to the attachment
  • Now includes the XFCE screen saver, which is disabled by default
  • Updates and other software during the slide show will now install the user's hardware drivers, for example. If users have nVidia video cards, they will be installed before restarting
  • Pinta is gone (not actively maintained)
  • Zim replaced the unsupported CherryTree with the preferred note recorder.
  • Chrome has been added and Chromium is now a Snap package. The team said it will not add the entire service to one of more than 2,000 software packages.
  • Lite Welcome (shortcuts are now available) and Lite User Manager are now updated to GTK3 and Python3
  • New logout options
  • New default wallpaper location
  • OEM installers (legacy and UEFI) for retailers and manufacturers
  • Firewall status has been added to the Lite widget
  • Language selection included on the login screen
  • Dual architecture support
  • Trash Bin works fine on desktop
  • New wallpapers provided
  • And dozens of other adjustments and changes
