Refuse to work inefficient overtime, don't let "Prisoner's Dilemma" limit your career development

A few words have been really popular recently: invoking, lying flat, hitting workers, social animals, 996... I asked a friend from a state-owned enterprise about their company's overtime status, and he asked me to go under their building at ten o'clock at night to see what it was called "Bright as day". It's so magical, it's just the young people on the Internet, and the state-owned enterprises that are called "elderly care" are also involved. The friend said again: volume, but not really volume. But it is only in the company to play with the mobile phone in front of the computer until 10:30 before leaving.

I saw a famous saying before: It is not your boss who makes you work overtime, but other people who are willing to work overtime. It is obvious that the work should be done quickly, and it will be finished before get off work. But there are always people who like to procrastinate, just sitting in front of the company computer and shaking their heads, so that the boss can see his diligence. As a result, the remaining colleagues were afraid of being fired and had to sit in front of the computer, even getting worse day by day. Is the salary higher than before? not at all. This is the "prisoner's dilemma" in the workplace.

What is Prisoner's Dilemma?

The Prisoner's Dilemma is a classic theory in game theory. The initial case refers to a special game between two arrested prisoners.

In 1950, Merrell Dereicher proposed the game "Prisoner's Dilemma". Duke perfected the idea.

The two criminals were caught as suspects and were placed in solitary confinement awaiting trial. Both were thinking about whether to confess or not.

若二人均不招,各判一年徒刑;
若一人招供,另一人不招,招供者立功释放,不招者判5年徒刑;
若二人都招,各判2年徒刑。

Why is it called "dilemma"?

Why is this still a dilemma when everyone has made the choices that are best for them? One answer is that "total returns" have fallen.

Add up the two men's years in prison and it's not the best choice for the group. In terms of total sentence, the total sentence of 2 years for joint cooperation is better than the total sentence of 4 years for joint betrayal.

Obviously, the more people who choose to cooperate, the higher the overall benefit will be.

Let's talk about the "prisoner's dilemma" of migrant workers in the workplace

There is a game company. For the past five years, all the programmers of the company have strictly implemented 955. They receive a salary of 300,000 a year and a year-end bonus of 50,000. After get off work every day, they can play ball, take a walk, and accompany their family on Saturdays and Sundays.

Later, the company recruited a highly educated turtle named Xiao Ming. Xiao Ming works very hard. He arrives at 8:00 in the morning and leaves work at 12:00 in the evening. Even on weekends, you can see the small computer on his corporate WeChat. At the end of the year, the department leader gave Xiao Ming an annual salary of 300,000 plus a year-end bonus of 100,000, and announced the distribution of this year-end bonus.

Xiao Chen saw this and wanted to get more year-end bonuses, so he clocked in and got off work at 12 o'clock in the evening. In the next year, more and more people got off work at 12:00, and everyone gradually lost their lives and worked every day. Only Xiao Li clocks in and leaves work on time from 1 to 5 o'clock every day.

At the end of another year, the leaders paid everyone an annual salary of 310,000 yuan and a year-end bonus of 50,000 yuan, and fired Xiao Li for slack at work. From then on, Xiao Chen cursed every day, but had to work until 12 o'clock.

That is to say, in this example, the working hours of the migrant workers have increased, but the money has not increased.

This is the prisoner's dilemma in the workplace, also known as involution.

So how to break this predicament?

(1) Think independently, don't follow others forever

I have been talking about independent thinking, but it is too difficult to really not be influenced by others. How can you reduce the influence of others on you? The easiest way is to read. Instead of looking at vertical specialist books, read widely. For example, if you are an operation, then you should not only read "Operation Light" and "Growth Hacking", you can read some books in other fields such as "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" and "Evolution". Once your mind is broadened, when others say some points of view, you can see their narrow places, and naturally it is not so easy to listen to them.

The other thing you can do is to make friends with people from all walks of life, which may be a bit difficult for the society, but you can encourage yourself to try. For example, when you are in a taxi, you can chat with the driver; when you go out to eat, you can chat with the waiter; or when you go to the park, you can chat with uncles and aunts. Different people have different experiences and have different views on things. The more you listen to them, the more natural solutions you will have.

(2) Stay away from "ineffective overtime" and focus on value orientation

In the workplace, there are always some people who are perfunctory and inefficient in their get off work. From time to time, they fish for fish. When it comes to off-duty hours, it is obvious that the work cannot be completed. So what should we do? After having dinner, I came back to continue working overtime, and then I finished the dragging thing. Such overtime is "self-impression", always in a low-level cycle, and it is a complete waste of life.

At work, everyone must stay awake, always maintain high efficiency and goal thinking, and be able to keep themselves in a state of renewal. At the very least, you should be able to classify work into light, heavy, slow, and urgent. Urgent and important things should be done first; important and not urgent things should be done every day; unimportant things should be given up or let others do.

(3) Institutional Construction

If a friend who formulates policy sees this article, please raise more issues, promote the improvement of my country's labor law, and save the migrant workers under the influence.

Ordinary migrant workers like Lao Li need to learn more about laws and rights, and at least when they are oppressed, they can take up legal weapons to protect themselves. Also, keep your eyes open, choose a company that abides by the law and is less introverted. After entering, you must gradually develop your own work rhythm, avoid internal friction, and find a balance between life and work.
