Oracle has released a new stable release of its open-source and cross-platform VirtualBox virtualization software for all supported platforms, adding support for the Linux client Linux Kernel 4.15, and many other improvements.
VirtualBox 5.2.8 is now available for download, finally bringing support for the latest Linux 4.15 kernel series for Linux-based guest operating systems you may want to run on virtual machines. Additionally, this means that various VirtualBox modules can now be compiled against Linux Kernel 4.15.
Additionally, VirtualBox 5.2.8 finally resolves the annoying black screen issue when enabling 3D in some Linux guests, and adds support for suppressing setuid and setgid in shared folders. For Windows guests, the update fixes a buggy functionality bug that occurred when using shared folders with certain applications.
Another interesting improvement that Oracle engineers implemented in the latest VirtualBox release is support for PCID, FSGSBASE and INVPCID CPU features for Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, Solaris and Windows guests. Additionally, the update fixes an EMM386 issue when a suitable page frame base is detected.
Oracle updated the front end of the application to use secure HTTPS downloads when updating the application or other components, fixed a seamless regression caused by the wm_class feature on Linux systems , and the attempt to open a new machine wizard on all supported platforms crash occurred.
On the audio side, VirtualBox 5.2.8 adds recognition support for recording sources in the PulseAudio mixer on the host OS when using multiple virtual machines at the same time, improved DirectSound backend for Windows guests, HDA emulation and surround sound settings.
In this new VirtualBox release, there are also some networking fixes that improve PXE booting of E1000 cards, and a workaround has been added for older customers who cannot enable bus mastering of virtio PCI devices. VirtualBox 5.2.8 for GNU/Linux, macOS and Windows platforms can now be downloaded from the official website.
