Kali Linux 2022.2 Released, Updated GNOME 42, Improved ARM Support

Kali Linux 2022.2 is officially released, which is also the second version of Kali Linux this year. The previous version was Kali Linux 2022.1 released in February this year.

GNOME 42

Kali Linux 2022.2 brings the latest version of GNOME, GNOME 42, which builds on the previous versions 40 and 41 and improves it.

The GNOME theme now includes a more modern look, removing arrows in popup menus and using more rounded corners. In addition, the dash-to-stock extension has been upgraded and tweaked to better integrate with the new look, and some bugs have been fixed.

Below is a preview of the upgraded Kali theme.

GNOME 42's built-in screenshot tool

In GNOME 42, there's a new feature that stands out above all others: screenshot and screen recording tools. In terms of user experience, this is a huge improvement. At the same time, screenshots are saved to ~/Pictures/Screenshots/the folder and copied to the clipboard, so users don't need to find them.

KDE Plasma 5.24

This new version of Plasma focuses on improving the design and improving the overall feel and usability of the environment.

Other desktop enhancements

Adjust Xfce

  • Disable noisy motherboard beeps when logging out dialog is clicked
  • Configure mousepad (text editor) to add missing newlines at the end of files (POSIX standard)
  • Set the default wallpaper for a multi-monitor setup
  • Fixed mouse pointer size to prevent auto scaling in large monitors
  • Provides a new simplified panel layout for ARM devices.
    • This modification also removes the CPU graphics widget, not only because it requires horizontal space, but also because its performance suffers in low-spec ARM devices.

application icon

It's been a while since the last update to the kali menu. This time the icons for nmap, fff and edb-debugger have been improved and updated, and new icons have been added for evil-winrm and bloodhound.

Another improvement is that programs containing the user interface will now respect custom icons provided by Kali. Previously, the icon in the App drawer displayed the correct image, but once you launch it, the hard-coded app icon will take precedence, usually with a lower quality and pixelated image. Today this change only affects KDE and GNOME desktops, not Xfce.

Automatically copy missing configurations

Generally, configuration files in Kali are stored in the $HOMEdirectory , but some programs do not support it. As a workaround, some configuration files need to be copied to the user's home directory upon creation.

There are two problems with this approach.

  • First, if the user deletes an important file in their folder, the system may throw an exception
  • Also, the user will only receive the available profile when it is created. Therefore, if an OS update or program adds a new file (or modifies an existing file), the user will not receive it unless they manually copy it.

With this change, the system will automatically copy any files found in your home folder without replacing existing files.

Support for VirtualBox shared folders

If you are using VirtualBox, when a user account is created it is now automatically added to the vboxsfgroup . This means that if you want to use shared folders, there is now one less step.

Adjustments to Terminal

  • Made small changes to Zsh syntax highlighting colors to improve readability.
  • python3-pip and python3-virtualenv are now included by default in Kali installations.
  • Added shell autocompletion for John The Ripper.
  • All...2john tools (zip2john, 7z2john, pdf2john, etc.) can now be invoked by typing their name without first cd /usr/share/john/.
  • Resource bundles (wordlists, windows-resources, powersploit, etc.) now show clearer output, with colors distinguishing the type of file or directory.
