Make a year-end summary report with reference to the chart of "The Economist", and immediately go up and down

Year-end report some time ago.

There was a leader who was not responsible for much departmental work. He was scheduled to report for 20 minutes to each department, but he spoke to the PPT for half an hour, and he even demonstrated the great achievement of launching Chang'e-5.

Show with numbers and illustrate with diagrams, the sense of professionalism is bursting.

This summarizing ability. People have to admire.

Compared with my simple report materials, I feel ashamed, and I need to seriously improve my chart presentation ability.

As the saying goes, if you want to be good, you must learn from good people. The same goes for doing things. If you want to study and figure out the production ability of data visualization, you can learn from the chart articles published in major newspapers.

Friends who often read The Economist should know that every issue will have an infographic. For example, the infographic of No. 2021.1.16 is about nutrition and health.

You can quickly know the author's point of view through the chart:

The proportion of people who died of stroke in Japan is declining rapidly, partly because they drank more milk and eggs.

To illustrate this conclusion, the author divides the picture into two parts.

The first half is based on the comparison of the death toll over the years, showing that the number of deaths from cancer and cerebrovascular diseases in Japan is falling rapidly.

In the second half, from 1961 to 2000, the proportion of Japanese drinking, sugar, and fish did not change much, but the proportion of drinking milk and eggs increased, and of course, the proportion of eating meat also increased. So the wording in the conclusion reached is "part of the reason."

In order to facilitate my intensive study and improve my graph analysis skills, I found a treasure, "A year in Graphic detail October 2018-December 2019" published by The Economist.

This PDF shows the complete set of infographics published by them from 2018 to 2019. The content is wonderful and it is very useful for data analysis and chart expression.

For example, this infographic tells about space launches. The bar graph shows the number of rocket launches.

In the picture, light red is the most prominent, representing Russia (Soviet Union). It launches so many, not to say how advanced their space technology is, but that the Soviet satellites were super unstable at that time. Even in the 1980s, the average lifespan of these satellites was only about one and a half years.

The infographic of my country's "One Belt One Road" project shows where there are conflicts, the cost of trade is greater.

This 64-page PDF contains a summary of 61 data visualizations. It is worth thinking about how these editors visually display such complex data using simple charts.

A picture is worth a thousand words!
