Microsoft officially announces new Copilot copyright commitment

Microsoft today released a new version of Copilot's copyright commitment and stated that when users are questioned due to copyright issues, Microsoft will bear the risks of potential legal liability.

Microsoft wrote in the announcement that when customers asked if they could use Microsoft's Copilot service and the content it generates without worrying about copyright claims. We offer a simple answer: yes, you can, and we will bear the risk of potential legal liability if you are challenged over copyright issues.

Microsoft said that the new version of the commitment builds on Microsoft's previous AI customer commitments and will extend intellectual property compensation support to commercial Copilot services. If a customer is sued for copyright infringement despite turning on built-in content filters when using products such as Copilot, Microsoft will defend the customer and pay any adverse judgment or settlement amount resulting from the lawsuit.

Microsoft said the Copilot Copyright Commitment is an important commitment that supports any customer who uses Copilot products and also helps protect content created by humans.
