OpenAI announces CEO and board members: Microsoft joins, Ilya out

On November 30, OpenAI announced its new leadership and initial board members on its official website: Sam Altman returned as CEO, Mira Murati continued as chief technology officer, and Greg Brockman continued as president.

New board members include:Bret Taylor (Chair), Larry Summers and Adam D'Angelo. Microsoft will join the OpenAI board of directors as a non-voting observer.

OpenAI has not announced any position for Ilya Sutskever, and discussions are ongoing about how he will continue to work at OpenAI. Previously, Ilya served as the chief scientist and board member of OpenAI and participated in the removal of Sam.

Later, things got serious, and Ilya was the most injured person in the whole incident, becoming the OpenAI version of "An Lushan". However, as one of the souls in the development of ChatGPT, Ilya is very likely to stay at OpenAI.

The main content of Sam's speech

I've never been more excited about the future. I am incredibly grateful for everyone’s efforts during uncertain and unprecedented circumstances. Our resilience and spirit make OpenAI stand out in the industry. I feel very good about our chances of succeeding in our mission.

I love and respect Ilya, I think he is a "guiding light" in the field of large models and his talent makes him shine so brightly. I have no grudge against him. While Ilya no longer serves as a board member, we hope to continue working with him and are discussing how he can continue his work at OpenAI.

Next, OpenAI has three urgent things to do:

1)Advance OpenAI’s research plan and further invest in full-stack security work, which is critical to our work. Our research roadmap is clear; this is a fantastic time to focus. I share everyone's excitement; we will turn this crisis into opportunity! I will be working with Mira.

2)Continue to improve and deploy our products to provide customers with better services. It’s important that people experience the benefits and promise of AI and have the opportunity to shape it. We continue to believe that great products are the best way to do this. I will work with Brad, Jason, and Anna to ensure our strong commitment to our users, customers, and partners around the world.

3)Bret, Larry and Adam will work very hard to re-establish the extremely important task of building a board with a different perspective to improve our governance structure and oversee an independent review of recent events. I look forward to working closely with them on these critical steps so that everyone can have confidence in the stability of OpenAI.

I'm grateful to Adam, Tasha, and Helen for working with us to find the solution that best served our mission. I am delighted to continue working with Adam and sincerely thank Helen and Tasha for their input into this process.

Thanks also to Emmett, who played a key and constructive role in helping us achieve this outcome. Emmett’s dedication to AI safety and balancing stakeholder interests is evident.

Mira has sacrificed herself for the mission, the team, and the company through all of this. She is an incredible leader, and there would be no OpenAI without her. Thank you.

Greg and I are partners in this company. We haven't figured out how to communicate organizationally, but we will.

Thank you for everything from the beginning to now, and the way you have handled things since this started and over the past week.

The leadership team—Mira, Brad, Jason, Che, Hannah, Diane, Anna, Bob, Srinivas, Matt, Lilian, Miles, Jan, Wojciech, John, Jonathan, Pat, etc.—are clearly ready to work without me management company.

They say one way to evaluate a CEO is how you select and develop your potential successors; by that metric, I did a lot better than I realized.

It's clear that the company is in a talented group of hands, and I hope that's obvious to everyone. Thank you all.

The main content of Bret's speech

On behalf of the OpenAI Board of Directors, I would like to express my gratitude to the entire OpenAI community, especially all OpenAI employees. They have worked together over the past week to help OpenAI find a way forward.

We are very pleased that Sam, Mira and Greg are back at the helm of the company and driving it forward. We look forward to working with them and all of them.

The board of directors is focused on strengthening OpenAI’s corporate governance and has developed the following three plans:

1) We will establish a qualified, diverse board of directors composed of individually exceptional individuals whose deep industry experience represents the breadth of OpenAI’s mission—from technology to security to policy. We are pleased that this board will include a non-voting observer from Microsoft.

2) Further stabilize the OpenAI organization so that we can continue to achieve our mission. This will include convening an independent committee of the board to oversee a review of recent events.

3) We will strengthen OpenAI’s governance structure so that all stakeholders – users, customers, employees, partners and community members – can trust that OpenAI will continue to thrive.

OpenAI is a more important institution than ever. ChatGPT has filled hundreds of millions of people’s daily lives and work with artificial intelligence. The popularity of ChatGPT has put artificial intelligence and its risks and benefits at the center of almost every discussion about the future of business and society.

We understand the seriousness of these discussions and the central role OpenAI plays in the development and security of these amazing new technologies. I'm excited to be a part of OpenAI and eager to work with everyone.
