JetBrains stated that their goal was to reduce the visual complexity of the IDE, provide easy access to basic functionality, and gradually expose complex functionality as needed - building what they consider to be clean, modern, and powerful. The new UI is a redesign of the existing JetBrains IDE product line, they have changed the look and feel of the main IDE window, as well as some UX changes, all code-centric features and integrations work as before. The new UI ensures full compatibility with all IntelliJ plugins (theme plugins may need to be updated).

Major changes in the new UI:

  • Simplified main toolbar with new VCS, project and run widgets
  • New tool window layout
  • New light and dark themes
  • Updated icon set

According to reports, the new UI will eventually be available in all IntelliJ-based products (except Rider and Android Studio), but some products may be delayed. Later this year, JetBrains will make the new UI available to every developer, and next year plans to make it the default -- first for new users, then for everyone else.
