Canonical is adding a new feature to its upcoming Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) operating system, which will be released at the end of April this year, allowing users to install a minimal, non-bloated Ubuntu operating system on their PCs.
This feature is called "Minimal Install", and it's an option that you can use on the "Ready to install Ubuntu" screen of the Ubuntu installer after you've chosen a keyboard layout. As you can imagine, this option is disabled by default.
Enabling it will install Ubuntu with a minimal desktop environment that includes a web browser and standard utilities, at least that's what the option's description tells us. So we took it as a trial and installed the current development version of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS with the minimum install options in the VM.
First look at the minimal installation of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
As you can see from the screenshots in this article, after installing Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) with the minimal install option, we got a cleaner Ubuntu session with only utility apps (including Mozilla Firefox) and some GNOME apps ( Such as Terminal, System Monitor, Calculator, Gedit, Evince and Video (Totem).
Among the utilities included in the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS minimal install are Software Updater, Software and Updates, Startup Applications, Power Statistics, Input Methods, Archive Manager, Characters, Font Viewer, Screenshots, Logs, and Passwords with key.
Most of these utilities are grouped in a "Utilities" folder for easy access and to keep GNOME's applications tidy. As expected, the minimal Ubuntu installation is brighter for system components and takes up less bulk on the disk drive, not to mention it's less bloated.
Not that Ubuntu is bloated, but there are many users who don't like specific apps or just want to customize their installation with the apps they need. That's it for the latest minimal install option in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, and it's a very welcome addition to the Linux operating system.
If you want to test the minimal installation option yourself, you can do so by downloading the latest Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) daily build ISO image . Keep in mind that the OS is still in development and some things may not work as expected. Ubuntu 18.04 LTS will be released on April 26, 2018.
