After 1 year and 4 months of waiting, the xfce 4.16 version was finally released. This version will replace 4.14 as the new stable version.
The xfce team stated that version 4.16 is the first version after the project was migrated to GitLab, and the project development workflow has undergone great changes. During the work cycle of this version, the team processed a total of 288 merge requests for the core components of xfce, and at the same time established a Docker container image and added a CI pipeline to all components to ensure that the build will not be broken.

- Updates and improvements to the window manager in the field of compositing and GLX: If the main display is set, the alt-tab dialog will now only be displayed there. In addition, some convenient new options to enlarge the cursor with other displays, and the option to keep the minimized window in the recently used list are all supplements to this version.
- Panel improvements: A new plug-in named "statustray" has been added, including transition animation, dark mode and other functions. In addition, many small improvements have been introduced, such as accessing desktop operations from the Launcher's right-click menu, the window button plugin now provides "Start a new application instance", and the workspace switcher can now choose to display the automatic numbering of the workspace, etc.
- Improved display dialog : Added support for fractional scaling in the display dialog, at the same time highlighted the preferred mode with an asterisk, and added an aspect ratio next to the resolution. The function of returning to work mode after misconfiguration of the display layout has also become more powerful.
- "About Xfce" dialog: Added a new tab to display basic system information, such as CPU or GPU model. In addition, the layout and visual effects of the dialog have been improved.
- Settings manager improvements: Improved search and filtering functions. In addition, all settings dialogs now use window decorations drawn by Gtk (client-side decoration).
