名词词组与冠词
这一章的重点是冠词，作者旋元佑老师强调语法在于理解而不是背诵，譬如专有名词部分说到被列为例外的，并要求学生背下来的东西，其实都非例外，反而都是很容易了解的。不过要做到深入了解还得多加练习，在看文章的时候留心名词短语，尤其是冠词的用法。
名词短语
名词属于实词，名词表示人、事物、地点或抽象概念的名称，用词尾的变化来表示单、复数。冠词是虚词，本身不能单独使用，也没有词义，它用在名词的前面帮助指明名词的含义。冠词分为不定冠词 a（an）和定冠词 the 两种。冠词是限定词 (Determiners) 之中的一种。名词短语由 冠词 + 形容词 + 名词 组成，名词和名词短语用作主语、宾语、补语。名词短语的难点在冠词部分，一不小心就会出错。
零冠词
零冠词（Zero Article，即不用冠词）。什么时候不需要用冠词呢？从语源学 (etymology) 的角度来看，冠词 a(n) 可以视为 one 一字的弱化(reduction) 结果。也就是说， a(n) 就代表 one 的意思，只是语气比较弱。a(n) 与 one 同样都是在交代它后面所接的名词是“一个”的概念。如果后面的名词不适合以“一个”来交代，也就是不适合加 a(n) 的话，就可把限定词这个位置空下来。除了复数以外，抽象名词(如 honesty、bribery )没有具体形状，不能以“一个”来表示。物质名词(如 water、food )虽然是具体的东西，可是形状不固定，也不能以“一个”来表示。这些不能以 a(n) 来引导的词就可以把限定词省略。如：
(many) good students. 复数
a new book 单数
Honesty is not necessarily the best policy. 抽象名词

Fresh water is a precious resource in Saudi Arabia. 没有复数形态

专有名词与补语位置
人名（如 Genghis Khan )、地名（如 Taibei )等都是专有名词。因为它所代表的对象只有一个，也不适合加 a(n) ，所以可以不用限定词。一个名词是否专有名词还需要根据在不同句子中的意思来判断。如：
There are five Sundays this month. 一个月中可能
会有四到五天
（这个月有五个星期日。）
I have an appointment on Sunday.指在一个星期中的星期日
(我星期日有约。）
放在补语位置的专有名词最难以判断。这里涉及到从句，同位语等复杂句子知识，后面补上。但可以记住补语和主语（或宾语)之间有同等的关系，如果主语（或宾语)是专有名词，那补语也应为专有名词。
定冠词 the 的用法
在语源学上， the 可视为 that 或 those 的弱化形式。而 that 或 those 是指示形容词，有明确的指示功能。所以 定冠词 the 也可以用同样的角度来了解：凡是上下文中有明指或暗示时，也就是有“那个”的指示功能时，便要用定冠词 the。这里看一句暗示的例子，先生对太太说：现在我要去办公室。虽然 the office 后并没有明指，可是太太知道，就是老公上班的办公室：
I’m going to the office now.
定冠词与专有名词
专有名词和定冠词是有冲突、且不能并存的。如果加了 the ， 就表示这个东西有两个以上，也就不是专有名词了。最后，这一章重要观念有三：
- 名词短语包括限定词、形容词、名词三个部分。任一部分都可能省略。
- 如果名词短语中不用限定词，是因为该名词不适合加 a(n)。
- a(n) 是 one 的弱化结果，而 the 是 that/those 的弱化结果。
测试
同样的，要巩固所学，还得练习，旋元佑老师的语法讲解可能与以往有所不同，就如海洋、河流、群岛、群山、杂志名、船名等等在之前是以专有名词的特例来记忆，但在这里只作规规矩矩的用法，完全没有例外。以新观念去练习以下题目吧，选出最适当的答案填入空格内，以使句子完整：
