Previously, we talked about how to adjust your mentality before entering a new company and be prepared to join the new company from the perspectives of new employees and job-changers. In this section, let’s talk about how to set goals for yourself when you first join the company.

1. Why set goals?

We often see some successful people, they are first of all a master of setting goals. Without goals, we have no direction to work hard; without goals, we will breed laziness; without goals, we will procrastinate. Therefore, no matter what stage of life we are in, we must set different goals. The achievement of each goal will lead us to realize our dreams.

Some people say that my goal is to become a regular employee in advance, some people say that my goal is to find a partner in the company, etc...

No matter what your goal is, only by setting a goal can you have the motivation to move forward, enable you to better obtain the results you want, and have a direction to guide you forward so that you will not lose yourself.

2. SMART principles for setting goals

In business management, the SMART principle is widely used. This SMART principle is also an effective means of personal goal management. Let me introduce to you what the SMART principle is.

  • Specific: The goal must be specific

  • Measurable: Goals must be measurable

  • Attainable: The goal must be achievable

  • Relevant: The goal must be related to other goals

  • Time-bound: The goal must have a clear deadline

A goal that meets the above five dimensions is a good goal.
When entering a new environment, everyone's situation is different, everyone's needs are also different, and everyone may have different goals. However, I think that for people who are new to the workplace or who have switched jobs to a new company, everyone should have a unified goal, which is to quickly demonstrate their abilities and gain recognition from their leaders .
Although the 12-word goal of "quickly demonstrate capabilities and gain recognition from leaders" does not comply with the SMART principle mentioned above, it can be used as a direction for setting goals after entering a new company. Everyone can use SMART principles to refine your goals according to their own circumstances.
Let me list a few goals that are in line with the SMART principle for you to get a feel for:

  • 1 day to get to know all the colleagues in the department and learn their names.

  • The project development environment was set up within 3 days so that the project could be run locally.

  • The optimization of SQL efficiency was completed within 3 days, and the query efficiency was reduced from the original 5 seconds to returning query results within 1 second.

  • Complete the payment system optimization plan within 1 week and pass the design review by the review committee.

  • Complete the launch of a marketing campaign within 2 weeks. There will be no bugs after launch. Monitor marketing data every day and proactively feedback marketing results to leaders.

  • Increase daily user activity from 5,000 to 10,000 within 1 month.

3. Three elements of goal setting

  • No more than three goals at a time

  • Don’t set your goals too big, make sure you can achieve them through hard work

  • Goals must have completion deadlines to avoid delays

At the end of this section, I would like to share with you a 4-word principle for showing personal abilities at work: "Three Doings and One Super" . Three Doings and One Super means: do it quickly, do it accurately, and give feedback when you are done. Exceed leadership expectations .

As the saying goes: "The three things a new official needs to do when taking office"! When we enter a new environment, we must also burn our own "three fires", which means that the first three things must be done quickly, accurately, and perfectly to exceed the leader's expectations! If you do the first three things well, you will definitely be recognized by your leader, and the subsequent work will be smooth and easy.

After entering a new environment, pay special attention to the three things at the beginning. You must do "three do and one exceed".

Later, I will introduce to you how to quickly get started with the project as a programmer.
