What does open source bring us? This is the title of the promotional article for this party: https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/5sR6TPEpQmYNBnCtVilkzg

This question can also be very personal: What does open source bring to me? On an autumn weekend, with rain in the forecast, open source people in Beijing still gather together at OceanBase's office in Pohang Center. From a personal perspective, to a larger historical and social perspective, what does open source bring to the world? Is it optional? If it doesn't matter, can we leave open source today?

(The following content is narrated from the perspective of the host Defu. Unless otherwise specified, I refer to the readers’ subjective feelings and actions following the host’s perspective and timeline.)

Hi, I am DeFu, the host of today’s event .

Welcome to the reading club organized by KCC. KCC , the full name of KAIYUANSHE City Community (Chinese: Kaiyuanshe City Community), is a regional open source community initiated by Kaiyuanshe and aims to allow open source communities to take root in every city.

Some friends may be participating in KCC activities for the first time, or it may be their first time to come into contact with offline activities of the open source community. It doesn't matter, it's my first time too.

Open source is really very friendly. For example, if you are interested in an open source project, you can submit code even if you are not a member of their team. Similarly, if you are interested in an offline open source project, you can be a host even if you are not a member of their team.

(The warm-up is over and the activity theme introduction begins)

Today’s event is called a book club, but it’s not really about handing out a book for everyone to read. Today there will be two friends who are very experienced in the open source field to share with you. roseduan will  talk about some personal experiences, as well as appropriate Teacher Si talks about the history of open source. This combination is very good. If you use history as a mirror, you can know the ups and downs; if you use people as a mirror, you can know the gains and losses.

The theme of today's book club is "What has open source brought us? "

According to my past experience in participating in other book clubs, the book club is not a technology sharing meeting. One person talks at the top and everyone listens at the bottom. You see, we are all gathered together in the seats. The reading club is an activity that encourages everyone to communicate and discuss. So in order to facilitate everyone to communicate later, but also to save time, each of us will give a brief self-introduction. Three In a sentence: how to call me, who I am or what I am doing now, and today's topic, what open source has brought to me.

Let me go first: you can call me Telford. I am currently engaged in development work in an open source time series database company. I am also a Bilibili UP owner in my spare time. Open source has brought me a job.

Shi Si, an author, open source has opened up a whole new world for me!

The self-introductions of many participants are omitted here.

.....

Through continuous warm-up, all attendees were able to establish contact with the theme of the event, which not only enlivened the atmosphere, but also enhanced everyone's sense of participation.

As I just said, this is my first time to participate in KCC activities, and I don’t know much about this organization. However, when I just introduced myself, you may have noticed that Teacher Chen Yang is the chairman of Kaiyuan Society. She must be very familiar with KCC. There are event organizers who know the event very well, so let’s first ask Mr. Chen Yang to introduce it to you as the organizer.

(Chen Yang passionately introduced the creation and development of Kaiyuan Society and its achievements along the way)

(Chen Yang couldn't stop feeling emotional at all. He very restrainedly introduced the original intention of KCC and its future prospects.)

I see that this activity arrangement includes a welcome and warm-up for you. The place has been warmed up, so you just need to welcome me.

(Inner monologue: Look at our venue, do we also want to welcome everyone? As a sensible host, we must give enough rights to sponsors. To store business data, use OceanBasee, and to store time series data, use Greptime .)

Okay, let’s invite the first sharing guest. He started from doing Java business development when he just graduated, to getting started with database/storage, and from being an ignorant technical novice to maintaining two storage engine open source projects with thousands of stars. He will share his open source journey, insights, experiences, lessons learned, and growth, and will also give some of his own suggestions to students who want to do open source but don’t know how to start.

We have invited database kernel development engineer and author of the open source project rosedb, roseduan  to share his "My Open Source Journey"

(Roseduan is calmly sharing his journey along the way.)

From the ppt style, it can be seen that Jia is a very down-to-earth engineer.

Young people are very brave. Talking about their experience in front of the seniors of open source databases is equivalent to me telling a talk show in front of Li Dan.

I'm a little nervous. I can see from the picture in your Zhihu article that this is not the real you.

When I just graduated, I was doing front-end business development, and now I am still doing visual development of databases. Why are people progressing so fast? This is the power of the open source community. A lot of growth can be achieved through open source. Yesterday happened to be the first anniversary of my joining this open source company. In this year of really investing in open source, I really felt a lot of things that I hadn't felt in the previous ten years.

Our next guest speaker has been working in the open source industry for more than ten years. He is a believer in open source and an evangelist. He is a reader and a writer.

a7ba33736e06a1805a9c36258628083d.jpeg

He said that open source is not an isolated event, nor is it an object that grows linearly. Open source is not even a technology. In the process of writing the trilogy of discovering open source, he looked back at the information industry in the past half century and thought about the impact of open source. What did it give us? What is the underlying movement logic? The vitality of open source is so strong, what is the driving force behind it?

These thoughts will be presented in the book "The History of Open Source". Teacher Shisi is still writing this book. Today's is a Developer preview. Teacher Shisi also hopes to find more creations in today's sharing and discussion. inspiration. This is also an open source creation method, right?

We have invited the creator of Open Source, Mr. Shi Si, to share his "History of Open Source" - how to think about open source in the economy and society.

(Shisi is explaining that he created "The History of Open Source" out of dissatisfaction with some of the listed events.)

Teacher Shisi's sharing is very in-depth. He is not a fast-food person. Many of the contents need to be listened to several times and thought about slowly to understand. So during previous book clubs, I recorded Teacher Shisi’s sharing and listened to it before going to bed, and then fell asleep quickly.

Just kidding, but in this era where short videos are popular and we are surrounded by fast-paced content. People like Teacher Shisi who lead by example and insist on reading and thinking, as an example, tell us that we should calm down to read and spend some time thinking.

In fact, both Roseduan's personal growth experience and Teacher Shisi's history of open source tell us that open source gains strength and value from time. This time may be the same day for more than ten years, it may be the persistence since graduation, or it may be a free afternoon. Just like today's book club activity, you can actually check the official account later. There are conclusions and PPTs we discussed today. You can read them in ten minutes, but why spend an afternoon here? Because this afternoon, we followed the guests’ sharing and thought, which made us grow slowly but truly.

Teacher Chen Yang talked about the issues of enterprise efficiency and community efficiency earlier, and I thought of a very interesting metaphor. Just a while ago, our company went to Qingdao for team building. On the first day, we organized a collective climb to Mount Laoshan. We got up early, ate, and set off. We took the ropeway up the mountain, saw Taoist temples, the sea, took a boat, and ate seafood. It was very efficient, but boring. We had free time the next day. Some people chose to go to the church, some went to the Beer Museum, some went swimming on the beach, and some sat in a beachside cafe and did nothing. A few of us went to citywalk and wandered for 20 kilometers. It seemed inefficient, but it was very interesting.

We happen to have so many friends here today and we still have some time, so let’s push each other. Adhering to the principle of come and go, whoever comes first will make a statement.

(Please let the reader make up his own mind. This is the most important part of the event. Everyone is competing to express their own opinions! They are also evaluating the perspectives of others.)

(As the host, I gave the gift to the youngest high school student in the room. Reason: The future of open source requires the participation of young people!)

(Chen Yang gave it to people from Guangzhou Kaiyuan who came from afar and had their trip canceled due to the typhoon.)

(OceanBase, the sponsor of this event, gave the book to a senior student to encourage him to be active and proactive in the event)

If you want to gain something from time, it will be slow and tiring, but reading clubs are a good platform for sharing and encouraging each other. I think this should not be called a reading sharing club, but should be called a reading mutual aid club. Through everyone Sharing and discussing together helps us make better progress.

At the same time, the open source community is also a place where you can participate with friends around you and feel the accumulation of time.

Thank you to the seniors in the open source community, and welcome to the newcomers to the community. I hope we can see you next time. Goodbye.

The topics we talked about today seem to be much more profound than before!

——Emily, co-founder and chairman of Kaiyuan Society

Open source, like everything in this world, is complex and requires hard work. There is no so-called overnight success, and there is no so-called nectar from heaven. To understand open source, start by understanding its development history.

——Shi Si, author, creator of "The Way of Open Source"

There is a shallow pond at the entrance of the community. At first, it was just rainwater. Once I stopped there, I realized that it has become an ecology of its own. The algae are lush, water striders are floating on the water, and dragonfly larvae are swimming in it. I can't help but recall my childhood playing in the water and sigh. The power of natural growth. KCC is like creating pools, in which the power of the community sprouts, gathers, and naturally grows into a vigorous ecology. Sharing lecturers, hosts, planning organizers, on-site participants, and venue providers naturally gather together. , open, diverse and dynamic, and its characteristics can also be reflected in the book delivery session of this salon.

——Liang Yao, director of Kaiyuan Society
