COSCon'20 Open Source Hardware Forum & Shenzhen Open Source Gathering

The COSCon open source hardware forum started in 2018, with software and hardware on the same platform "sharing open source"; symbiosis in 2019, with multiple elements joining hands to "build the source ecology together".

The sustainability of the open source hardware ecosystem requires the industry to move forward. This year, under the influence of the inherent difficulties in the manufacturing industry and the impact of multiple parties in global trade, the Open Source Hardware Forum will focus on exploring the industrial development of open source hardware with everyone.

The content of this forum will involve the trend of the open source hardware industry, its impact on the manufacturing model, and the sharing of experience in the industrialization of open source hardware from the perspectives of maker team entrepreneurship, developer relationship management, open source standard organization project operation, and business incubation. It also involves the combination of open source hardware and hot industrial technologies such as artificial intelligence and Hongmeng OS.

This forum will also try the combination of online and offline for the first time. We sincerely invite everyone to share global hard wisdom online and gather in Shenzhen Open Source Valley offline!

From open source hardware to startups

Tony Huang

Co-founder & CTO of Shanghai Slamtec

Lecturer profile: Shanghai Silan Technology Co., Ltd. was established in 2013. It was born out of RoboPeak, an open source hardware maker team. It is one of the earliest companies in the world engaged in the exploration and development of robot autonomous positioning and navigation technology. The field of robotics has achieved comprehensive application and landing. Huang Jueshen (Tony Huang) is one of the initiators of the RoboPeak team and the co-founder of the company, and now the company serves as the CTO.

Abstract: In 2009, the RoboPeak maker team was established in Shanghai. Actively participated in the open source hardware community, and released a variety of open source hardware; in 2013, with the release of the RPLIDAR series lidar, RoboPeak officially transformed from a maker team into a company Slamtec; and this matter also from the team The hobbies of the members have turned into a career for the partners of the company; in this short sharing, I hope to share with you some of our experiences in the process, to love and devote ourselves to open source hardware, to commercialization, to Entrepreneurial partners, provide some encouragement and advice.

Talk about the developer relationship of IoT chips from the perspective of a maker

Sun Haoqin

Senior Hardware Engineer of Mishan Studio

Lecturer profile: Mishan Studio is an organization dedicated to the dissemination of open source hardware projects. Sun Haoqin is the male owner of Mishan Studio, a senior hardware engineer, and an external lecturer of ofcourse.

Abstract: Developer relationship was first proposed by software vendors. Using open source software to attract developers, expand its size, become a de facto standard, and then harvest the market has been tried and tested. In the hardware industry, although the industry has developed vigorously in the past 20 years, developer relations have not received much attention. Major chip manufacturers still use the original factory-agent-customer sales model, but with the miniaturization of customers and the introduction of agile development, this traditional service model is becoming more and more difficult. #On the eve of the outbreak of the IoT industry, many manufacturers in the IoT ecological chain began to realize the importance of developer relations. From chips, operating systems, compilers, to cloud services, they are trying to talk directly to developers and collect their feedback. Intel played the cards of Edison, Galileo, and Curie, but unfortunately encountered Waterloo for various reasons. But the rising star Espressif has made a name for itself in the open source world with two ICs, ESP32 and ESP8266. Sun Haoqin will use the above examples to talk to you about how to do developer relations in the IoT field from the perspective of a maker.

Introduction to the open source platform 96Boards and a demo based on Hongmeng OS

Qi Shaomin

96Boards Global Project Leader

Lecturer profile: 96Boards global project leader, has participated in mobile phone, tablet, VR, router, Robotics product research and development, chip planning and application, and international ecological organization operation management and other related industries. He has worked in many Fortune 500 companies and participated in 96Boards open source standard platform and self-driving open source software Auoware Foundation and other speech introductions in forums of different industry organizations.

Abstract: 96Boards is an international neutral open standard organization, which defines open source hardware and software standards that do not depend on SoC development platforms. 96Boards is a membership-based organization. We cooperate with SC members (original IC manufacturers), MP manufacturers, partners, etc. Based on different specifications of 96Boards, a series of open platforms for the latest SoC processors are developed. The software and hardware are open source and have independent operating communities for technical support. Many original manufacturers, operating system manufacturers, algorithm and software manufacturers, product developers and enthusiasts are based on This is for prototyping or product secondary development, and open source to give back to the community to further promote the ecology. The 96Boards development platform supports the development of general-purpose operating systems. Subsequent platforms will gradually support Hongmeng OS. The following will be an online demo of HMOS based on the 96Boards IVY5661 platform (UNISOC). The relevant codes have been uploaded. We welcome developers to use the open source development platform together, and can contribute the common parts of development to the community to promote healthy ecological development together.

Talking about the industrialization of open source hardware from the perspective of incubation

Tang Yunfeng

President of SKFI China-Korea Future Innovation Accelerator, Chairman of Alibaba Cloud ACE Developer Community Chengdu

Lecturer profile: Tang Yunfeng, was elected Alibaba Cloud MVP in 2018, and the field of award is artificial intelligence. Participated in Yunqi Conference and Dingding Salon many times as a sharing guest. Undertook the 2020 Yunqi Conference Baichenghui-Chengdu Station and Chongqing Station, and held 4 related activities.

Abstract: Open source hardware provides a very good verification platform for start-up companies, and also provides balanced R&D and production options for small scenarios. On the other hand, open source hardware also provides a rapidly expandable third interface (computer monitor, mobile phone screen) for traditional small program and mobile application development teams, helping front-end development teams quickly bring the user interface into the physical world and enhance innovation The comprehensive competitive advantage of entrepreneurial enterprises. Utilizing the open ecology of open-source hardware, continuous empowerment from the technical level and investment incubation has become a very controllable method of cost and risk. Another part of the theme sharing is how the innovation team gives back to the open source community, and how to find a balance between commercialization and open source sharing.
