To install Chinese input method on Ubuntu 18.04 system, you need to use ibus input method configuration;
Your Ubuntu needs to be connected to the Internet properly throughout the process because some installation packages need to be downloaded.

1. Install the Chinese language pack
First find and open Settings, then find and open Region & Language, select Manage Installed Languages,
Then select Install/Remove Language..., select Chinesees (Simplified), click Apply, and then wait for a while.
2. Install ibus input method
After the Chinese language pack is installed, it is necessary to install the ibus input method.
Enter the command in Terminal:
sudo apt-get install ibus ibus-clutter ibus-gtk ibus-gtk3 ibus-qt4
3. Install Chinese Pinyin engine
After the ibus framework is installed, you need to switch to the ibus framework.
go to im-config -s
After switching to the ibus framework, start installing the Chinese Pinyin engine.
sudo apt-get install bus-pin
4. Add Chinese Pinyin input method to IBus Preference
Bring up the IBus Preference window,
sudo ibus-setup
Then select Input Method, Add, Chinese, Pinyin, Add,
(If you can’t find the Pinyin option in this step, just restart Ubuntu and come in again and it will appear), and finally Close.
5. Add Chinese Pinyin input method to keyboard input sources (Input sources)
Open Settings, find Region & Language and open it. Under Input Sources, click +, select Chinese, and then look for Chinese (Pinyin). If you cannot find Chinese (Pinyin), restart Once, open it and come in again to find it.
Find Chinese (Pinyin) and click Add.

The Ubuntu system is different from the Windows system in switching between Chinese and English. The default shortcut key for switching input methods in Ubuntu is win+space. If you want to reset the shortcut keys according to your own habits, do the following:
First open the settings, then click the small magnifying glass logo in the upper left corner, search for keyboard, and click under the Typing option on the right: switch to the previous input source or switch to the next input source.
Then press the shortcut key you want on the keyboard,
Click Set to complete the setting.
Now that all operations are completed, you can freely use the Chinese Pinyin input method in the Ubuntu system.
