Windows 11 Insider Preview 25197.1000 (rs_prerelease) preview released

According to news from Chen Yi's exclusive paradise on September 9, Microsoft today released the latest Windows 11 Insider Preview 25197.1000 preview version for Windows Preview members. In version 25197.1000, tablet-optimized taskbar and system tray updates were reintroduced.

TL;DR

  • We've reintroduced tablet-optimized taskbar and system tray updates. These changes are starting to roll out, so not all Insiders in the Dev Channel will see them immediately.
  • We're releasing several app updates to Windows Insiders in the dev channel.

what's new

Tablet-optimized taskbar

We've reintroduced a touch-optimized taskbar designed to give you more confidence and comfort when using your device as a tablet. When you disconnect or fold back the keyboard on your 2-in-1, your taskbar will automatically transition to this optimized version.   This feature is only available on devices that can be used as tablets. It is not suitable for laptop or desktop computers.

As a reminder, this taskbar has two states:   collapsed   and  expanded . In the  collapsed   state, the taskbar makes room for you, giving you more screen real estate and preventing you from accidentally invoking the taskbar while holding your tablet. In the   expanded   state, the taskbar is optimized for easier touch use. You can easily switch between the two states by swiping up and down on the bottom of the device.

If this feature is available, you'll see a optimize taskbar when using this device as a tablet in  Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar Behavior A new setting for Touch Interactions, which is set to On by default .

[We're starting to roll out this feature, so it's not open to all insiders yet, as we plan to monitor feedback and see how it lands before rolling it out to everyone. ]

Feedback: Please submit feedback in the Feedback Center (WIN + F) under Desktop Environment > Taskbar.

System Tray Update

This update introduces a system tray update that affects all device types, not just 2-in-1s. With this change, users will see circular focus and hover handling on all icons in the lower right corner due to the continued modernization of this experience.

You may also notice that there is no way to drag and drop or rearrange systray icons with this change. We listened to your feedback on this change earlier this year and are working to address this issue in a future Insider Preview release.

changes and improvements

[set up]

  • We started rolling out animated icons and artwork in the Settings app. With animated icons in the navigation bar, we continue to evolve our motion design principles, transforming these familiar interactions from purely functional to something pleasing.

  • We're rolling out a small tweak starting with Build 25179 to improve the key repeat rate for the traditional touch keyboard layout as well as the default touch keyboard layout, so it's available to all Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel. Now it has a rate of 20 keys per second (for example, when the delete key is held down).

repair

[system tray update]

NOTE: These fixes will only appear if Tablet Optimized Taskbar with System Tray Update is enabled on your device. See above for details on the tablet-optimized taskbar and system tray updates, which are starting to roll out to Windows Insiders but are not yet available to everyone.

  • The taskbar should no longer flicker due to system tray changes in non-tablet-optimized scenarios.
  • Fixed an issue that caused parts of the taskbar or its icons (such as search) to get stuck in the wrong theme color when switching between light and dark themes.
  • The date and time should no longer get stuck on the side of the screen due to systray changes.

[start]

  • Fixed a crash users were seeing when using Start's recommendations section.

[file manager]

  • Fixed an issue that resulted in a small subset of "Launch Folder Windows in Separate Process" Insiders not being able to launch File Explorer on the last two flights due to explorer.exe crashing.
  • In the case of deleting a large number of files at once, some work has been done to help improve the performance of deleting files via File Explorer (when emptying the Recycle Bin or using Shift+Delete).

[enter]

  • Fixed an issue that caused ctfmon.exe to crash when adding words to your spelling dictionary in recent flights.
  • Dragging a voice input window to another monitor that has a different scaling than the original monitor should now work correctly instead of bouncing back.
  • Fixed sporadic crashes in recent builds when using input switchers.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause speech typing and other input features to hang on initialization.
  • Fixed an issue where some Sinhala words displayed unexpected overlaps.

[set up]

  • Updated the design of List Displayed Applications > Startup Applications and Applications > Advanced Application Settings > Application Execution Aliases pages to be more consistent with other settings pages.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause Setup to crash when removing a device.
  • Updated the Personal Dictionary section under Privacy & Security > Inking & Typing Personalization to say "Custom word lists".

[small parts]

  • Fixed an issue that caused the weather icon in the taskbar to be drawn too high and have no text on recent flights.

[open window]

  • Clicking the title bar portion of a preview thumbnail in Task View should now actually switch to that app instead of just closing Task View.
  • Fixed sporadic explorer.exe crashes that could occur when using ALT+Tab or Task View.

[task manager]

  • Fixed an issue affecting task manager reliability.
  • If the graph is hidden on the Performance page, the circles that identify each different section should now be less blurry.

[other]

  • Fixed an issue that could cause some applications to hang when attempting to print if an IPP printer took too long to respond to a print request.
  • Fixed EnumPrinters not always returning the correct size for pcbNeeded, which could cause some programs to hang.
  • Fixed a typo in the dialog displayed when Smart App Control blocks an application.
  • Fixed an issue where certain characters were missing from the boot environment, causing boxes to appear in the text when using the Chinese (Simplified) or Korean display language.

Note: Some of the fixes mentioned here in the Insider Preview builds on the Dev Channel may find their way into servicing updates for Windows 11 released builds.

known issues

[General]

  • We're investigating reports that audio stopped working for some Insiders after upgrading to the latest flight.
  • We are investigating reports that a few different applications have started crashing in recent builds.
  • We are investigating reports of Insiders experiencing bugchecks when moving the mouse in certain games
  • We're investigating reports that some Insiders are seeing OneDrive setup requiring setup every time the PC restarts.

[file manager]

  • We are working to resolve an issue where command bar items such as copying, pasting, and emptying the Trash may unexpectedly not be enabled when they should be.

[set up]

  • [NEW] We are investigating some issues where uninstalling certain apps using Settings > Apps > Installed Apps was not working properly.

[Tablet-optimized taskbar]

  • [NEW] The taskbar sometimes flickered when transitioning between desktop and tablet poses.
  • [NEW] When switching between desktop and tablet poses, the taskbar takes longer than expected to transition to the touch-optimized version.
  • [NEW] Using left or right edge gestures may cause widgets or notification center (respectively) to overlap or be cut off from the taskbar.
  • [NEW] When using the bottom right edge gesture to view quick settings, the taskbar would sometimes get stuck in the expanded state instead of closing to the collapsed state.
  • [NEW] When there are no running windows on the desktop, the taskbar sometimes collapses when it should expand.

[small parts]

  • Notification badge numbers may appear misaligned on the taskbar.

for developers

You can download the latest Windows Insider SDK   at aka.ms/windowsinsidersdk.

The SDK NuGet package is now also available in the NuGet Gallery | WindowsSDK which includes:

  • .NET TFM package for .NET applications as described in ms/windowsinsidersdk
  • C++ packages of Win32 headers and libraries for each architecture
  • Use the BuildTools package when you only need tools like MakeAppx.exe, MakePri.exe, and SignTool.exe

These NuGet packages provide more granular access to the SDK and better integration into CI/CD pipelines.

About the Dev Channel

The Dev Channel receives builds from our engineers that represent long-term lead work   with features and experiences that may never ship,  as we experiment with different concepts and get feedback. It's important to remember that the builds we release to the Dev Channel should not be considered to match any particular Windows build, and included features may change over time, be removed, or be replaced in Insider builds, Or it may never be released outside of Windows for insiders to general customers. For more information read this blog post to learn how we plan to use the Dev Channel to incubate new ideas, work on long-term lead projects, and control the status of individual features.

These aren't always stable builds, and sometimes you'll see issues that prevent critical activity or require workarounds.   Be sure to read the known issues listed in our blog post, as we log many of these issues on every flight.

Build numbers in the Dev channel are higher than Windows 11 Preview builds in the Beta and Release Preview channels. You will not be able to switch from the Dev channel to the Beta or Release Preview channels without performing a clean install back to the current released version of Windows 11.

Also: Because the Dev and Beta channels represent parallel development paths for our engineers, in some cases features and experiences appear first in the Beta channel.

For these pre-release versions, the desktop watermark you see in the lower right corner of the desktop is normal.
