02  ASRS system

ASRS systems are usually multi-level installations. In this article, we will only refer to ASRS on fixed orbit.
Shuttles typically run on rails to move along aisles and ranks. In the picture shown here, one ASRS shuttle sits on top of another like a carriage. The main shuttle moves the goods along the aisle, and the auxiliary shuttle or platoon robot moves the material into a row to the left and right of the aisle.
Each shuttle has a lift mechanism that lifts the pallet. To store and retrieve materials on multiple floors, a piece of equipment called a vertical crane is used. The picture below shows a system that uses a vertical crane to lift pallets or pallets to the proper racking height. Such cranes usually move on two axes. One axis is height and the other axis is positioning along the track on the floor.

Automated storage and retrieval systems have both advantages and disadvantages for operators.
