Purism has announced a partnership with UBPorts to offer the Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system on the upcoming Librem 5 Linux phone.

Ubuntu Touch is a mobile-friendly version of the popular Linux-based Ubuntu operating system. Initially, it was conceived as an open-source alternative to Android and iOS, but unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have lived up to expectations. Many people were surprised when Canonical decided to stop work on it. Later, the UBPorts community became interested in it and decided to continue development work on Ubuntu Touch.

One of the most interesting open source smartphones for Librem 5, community members looked forward to working with UBPorts as it gained momentum in development and started working with the GNOME and KDE projects. Fortunately, this partnership eventually came to fruition.

According to the official blog post, the Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system will be supported and integrated with Librem 5 hardware. Users are also looking forward to future compatibility.

Librem 5 will be released in January 2019, with the addition of Ubuntu Touch support, Librem 5 will be available in three different operating systems:

  • Librem 5 with PureOS

  • Librem 5 with PureOS (KDE Plasma Mobile)

  • Librem 5 with Ubuntu Touch

Ricardo Mendoza, vice chairman of the board of directors of UBports, said in a statement: "Ubuntu Touch was developed with the goal of being an alternative to the Android operating system in the mobile ecosystem. We believe the future of mobile phones is far from Android, and Librem 5 with Ubuntu Touch is driving that. The perfect platform for a revolution."

Purism raised more than $2 million last fall to build the Librem 5 smartphone, which is currently available for pre-order at $599.

This is great news for open source enthusiasts looking for alternatives to Android and iOS.
