2020 Open Source Work Report: Open Source continues to be hot, DevOps rises

The Linux Foundation and online course company edX have  jointly released a  2020 open source work report , which studies the market's demand for open source and talent trends in the open source industry.

The report is based on data from more than 175 hiring managers from global enterprises, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMB), government organizations, and personnel agencies, as well as survey data from more than 900 open source professionals. The content of the report mainly focuses on the latest trends in open source careers, required skills, motivations to motivate open source job seekers, how employers attract and retain top talent, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on recruitment trends.

The report pointed out that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the market's demand for open source technology skills is still growing. 37% of hiring managers stated that they will hire more IT professionals in the next six months. Specifically, 81% of hiring managers said that recruiting open source talent is the top priority for the future . 56% of hiring managers plan to increase their recruitment of open source professionals in the next six months.

It is undeniable that even in this special period, the market's demand for open source is higher than ever. 93% of hiring managers said that it is difficult for them to find enough talents with open source skills. Another 63% said that their organization has begun to use code or other resources to support open source projects in order to recruit talents with these software skills; in 2018, this proportion was still 48%.

The main findings of the 2020 open source work report are as follows:

  • Although the pandemic and the economic slowdown , but there are still  37 percent of hiring managers said they will hire more skilled IT professionals in the next six months.

  • Online training is popular in the COVID-19 era: 80% of employers now report that they provide employees with online training courses to learn open source software, up from 66% two years ago. 
  • The importance of certification is increasing: 52% of hiring managers are more inclined to hire certified people, up from 47% two years ago. 
  • There is still a shortage of qualified open source talent: 93% of hiring managers say it is difficult to find enough talent with open source skills, up from 87% two years ago.
  • The rise of DevOps : DevOps professionals have risen to the most popular positions, and 65% of companies want to hire more DevOps talent, up from 59% in 2018. 
  • Cloud technology is hot: As far as knowledge is concerned, hiring managers said that the knowledge impact of open cloud technology is the most significant. Compared with 66% in 2018, 70% of people are more likely to hire professionals with these skills.
