GNOME Mutter provides Wayland with non-redirected full-screen support

GNOME 3.38 , which is still under development, recently merged a major change that will benefit Wayland gamers and other players.

Jonas Ådahl from Red Hat is committed to implementing Wayland's non-redirected full screen to bypass compositing when running full screen games, and similar changes have been merged into Mutter. When the application / game occupies the entire area of the desktop, this function basically avoids extra synthesizer work. For gamers running GNOME Wayland sessions, this non-redirected full-screen way to bypass Mutter for synthesis should have a significant effect on performance.

GNOME's X11 code already supports this full-screen bypass synthesis, and Mutter Wayland's code has finally seen similar processing in the Git master after reviewing the patch for seven months.

For more details, please see this now approved merge request . The performance of the game in GNOME 3.36 / Ubuntu 20.04 X.Org vs. (X) Wayland session has been quite good, and this Wayland feature helps solve the performance problems of Wayland synthesizer on GNOME.
