GNOME 40 will support file creation time and wallpaper preview

This week, the upcoming GNOME 40 reached the milestone of the alpha version. The highlight of this version is to support file creation time and enhance the "set as wallpaper" operation.

File creation time

In the early days, the file system of Linux Kernel did not support creation time. Its ctime is actually "change time", that is, the time when the file status changes. Therefore, it is impossible to display file creation time or based on creation time in desktop environments like GNOME. Sorted.

About 5 years ago, the Linux kernel added the " Enhanced file stat system call " and " statx: Add a system call to make enhanced file info available  " series of patches. These patches have enhanced file information, including the creation time. Finally, in this year's GNOME 40 will also support creation time, and can be sorted by creation time.

Wallpaper settings

Previously, there was a "set as wallpaper" operation in the context menu of the image file, which would cause some strange behaviors , such as creating a new useless directory, which is different from the user experience provided by the setting program.

Now, GNOME 40 not only fixes this problem, but also gets a preview window when going through the online text menu "Set as Wallpaper", and then choose whether to set it.
