Self-calibration of a binocular vision system based on a one-dimensional target
Yu Zhao & Weimin Li

Abstract

This paper proposes a method of self-calibration of a binocular vision system based on a one-dimensional (1D) target. This method only needs a 1D target with two feature points and the distance between the two points is unknown. During the process of computation, the distance value can be set an arbitrary value which is near the actual distance value. Using the method proposed in this paper, we can get the parameters of the binocular vision system including internal parameters of the two cameras and the external parameters (but there exists a non-zero scale factor in the translation vector which is connected to the initial distance value we set), the distortion parameters of cameras and the three-dimensional coordinates of the two points in different positions. In this paper, we determine theoretically that the initial distance value will not influence the results, and also the results of numerical simulation and experiment example are shown to demonstrate the method. Most importantly, this method is insensitive to the initial distance value, and it is the biggest advantage. In a practical application, we can use a 1D target with unknown distance to calibrate the binocular system conveniently; also we can use this method to calibrate the camera in a large field of view with a small 1D target.

A New Binocular Camera Calibration Method Based on an Improved Genetic Algorithm

https://www.scientific.net/AMR.411.602

In this paper,an improved genetic algorithm was proposed, which is applicable to binocular camera calibration. On the one hand, conventional encoding method is improved so that variable search interval can be adjusted adaptively. On the other hand, crossover and mutation probability is varied by using superiority inheritance principle to avoid premature question. Experimental results show that the proposed method has a higher calibration accuracy and better robustness, compared to those of non-linear calibration methods. The proposed method is able to improve the performance of global optimization effectively.

3D auto-calibration method for head-mounted binocular gaze tracker as human-robot interface

This paper presents a novel calibration method for a head-mounted binocular gaze tracker that enables the human gaze point, representing the selective visual attention of the user, to be tracked in 3D space. The proposed method utilizes two calibration planes with visual marks to calculate the mapping points between a forward-looking camera and two eye-monitoring cameras in an expanded 3D spatial domain. As a result, the visually attentive point of the user can be tracked, regardless of variations in the distance from the user to the target object. The proposed method also provides a more convenient calibration procedure and more accurate results in tests than the previous method suggested by the authors. The performance is tested when varying the 3D position of an attentive object, and the experimental results are discussed.
