A flying horse

Ada was an imaginative child. Her education fostered her interest in mathematics and science and she became fascinated by all things mechanical. Throughout 1828 her letters to her mother frequently refer to her attempts to make wings (of paper, silk, or feathers) to enable her to fly. In this letter dated April 7, her imagination has leapt ahead to a project for a flying machine powered by a steam engine.

Writing exercise

From the age of five, Ada was educated by a succession of governesses, in a rigorous system devised and closely supervised by Lady Byron. In April 1822 Ada sent her mother an account of her lessons -- music, French, and arithmetic. The journal of her first governess reveals that she was also soon studying geography, drawing, and spelling.
