"A new, a vast, and a powerful language is developed for the future use of analysis, in which to wield its truths so that these may become of more speedy and accurate practical application for the purposes of mankind than the means hitherto in our possession have rendered possible."

Advanced mathematics

To understand how the Analytical Engine worked, Ada Lovelace needed advanced mathematics. In the early 1840s she took what was in effect a correspondence course with the leading mathematicain Augustus De Morgan, studying the same advanced material as his students as University College London. De Morgan thought highly of her abilities, describing her to Lady Byron as "utterly out of the common way," and capable of grasping the "real difficulties of first principles."

Daguerreotype of Ada Lovelace by Antoine Claudet, early-mid 1840s

Antoine Claudet learned the art of photography from Louis Daguerre, the inventor of one of the earliest photographic processes. He established his first Daguerreotype studio along London's historic Strand thoroughfare in 1841, before moving to Regent's Park and finally to Regent's Street. His customers included many well-known figures in fashionalbe, literary and scientfic circles, among them Michael Faraday, Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace.
