On the last day of November, as OpenAI released an announcement on its official website, "Sam Altman returns to the position of CEO and OpenAI establishes a new initial board of directors," this 12-day " a>” was finally put down and OpenAI got back on track. Civil unrest

Nothing has changed much:

  • Sam Altman remains CEO;

  • Mira Murati serves as chief technology officer;

  • Greg Brockman returns as president.

But, it seems that everything has changed:

  • OpenAI’s new board of directors will be chaired by Bret Taylor (chairman, former co-CEO of Salesforce, chairman of Twitter, and founder of Quip), Larry Summers (a famous American economist, former 71st Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Treasury and Director of the National Economic Council of the Obama Administration) ) and Adam D'Angelo (Quora's co-founder and part-time CEO Adam D'Angelo);

  • Original board members Helen Toner, director of strategy at Georgetown University's Center for Security and Emerging Technologies, and Tasha McCauley, CEO of robotics company Fellow Robots, left the board;

  • OpenAI co-founder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever  will no longer serve as a member of the board of directors, and further discussions are ongoing as to whether to stay or leave.

Regarding the release of this latest decision, Sam Altman also explained and responded to many people’s doubts:

I recognize that during this process some questions have been raised regarding Adam's possible conflicts of interest in running Quora and Poe while serving on the OpenAI board of directors. For the record, I would like to note that Adam has been very clear with me and the board about potential conflicts and has done what he needs to do (recuse when appropriate and even when we feel it is necessary) Offer to leave the board) to manage the situation appropriately and avoid decision-making conflicts. Quora is a large customer of OpenAI, and we find it helpful to have customer representation on the board. We anticipate that if OpenAI is successful as we hope, it will touch many areas of the economy and create complex relationships with many other entities around the world, creating a variety of potential conflicts of interest. The way we plan to handle this situation is for full disclosure and for the Board to decide how to manage the situation.

Meanwhile, Sam Altman said, "The best interests and mission of the company always come first. It's clear that there was a real misunderstanding between myself and the board members. For my part, it's important to learn from this experience and continue to build on our success as a company." It will be important to apply these learnings moving forward. I welcome the Board's independent review of all recent events. I thank Helen and Tasha for their contribution to the strength of OpenAI."

The following is a letter from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and OpenAI’s new board chairman Bret Taylor to all employees.

Sam to everyone at OpenAI:

I will return as CEO of OpenAI. Mira will return to her role as CTO. The new initial board of directors will consist of Bret Taylor (Chair), Larry Summers and Adam D’Angelo.

I've never been more excited about the future. I am extremely grateful for everyone’s efforts during an uncertain and unprecedented situation, and I believe our resilience and spirit set us apart in the industry. I feel very, very good about our chances of succeeding in our mission.

Before talking about the next key development directions, I want to express some gratitude.

I love and respect Ilya and I think he is a guiding light in this field and a valuable talent. I hold no grudge against him. While Ilya will no longer be a member of the Board of Directors, we hope to continue our working relationship and are discussing how he can continue to work at OpenAI.

I am grateful to Adam, Tasha, and Helen for working with us to find solutions that best fit our mission. I'm excited to continue working with Adam and sincerely thank Helen and Tasha for putting so much effort into this process.

Thanks also to Emmett, who played a key and constructive role in helping us achieve this outcome. Emmett’s commitment to AI safety and balancing stakeholder interests is clear.

Mira did an outstanding job throughout the entire process, serving the mission, team, and company selflessly. She's an incredible leader, and OpenAI wouldn't be OpenAI without her. Thanks.

Greg and I are partners running the business. We haven’t figured out how to represent this on the org chart yet, but we’ll figure it out. At the same time, I just want to be clear. Thank you for everything from start to finish, thank you for everything from the beginning to last week.

The leadership team—Mira, Brad, Jason, Che, Hannah, Diane, Anna, Bob, Srinivas, Matt, Lilian, Miles, Jan, Wojciech, John, Jonathan, Pat, and more—are clearly ready Running the company without me. Some people say that one way to evaluate a CEO is how well he selects and develops potential successors; on this metric, I did much better than I thought. It seems to me that the company has been left in good hands, and I hope that's clear to everyone. Thank you everyone.

Jakub, Szymon, and Aleksander are all outstanding talents, and I am delighted that they have rejoined to drive us and our research forward. Thanks.

To everyone on our team: I'm sure there's going to be a lot of coverage about this period of our lives, and I hope the first thing they say is how amazing this entire team is. Now that we're through this, we haven't lost a single employee. You are steadfast for each other, this company, and our mission. One of the most important things for a team building AGI safely is the ability to handle tense and uncertain situations and maintain good judgment throughout the process. Full marks to you. thank you all.

Satya, Kevin, Amy, and Brad have been incredible partners throughout this entire process, always sticking to the right priorities. They have always had our back and are ready to welcome all of us if we fail to achieve our main goals. Clearly, we made the right choice to partner with Microsoft, and I'm pleased that our new board of directors will include them as non-voting observers. thank you all.

Thank you to our partners and users for supporting us. We have truly felt the support and love shown to us, which has helped us all get through this. We have not lost a client which will make us work even harder for you and we are all excited to get back to work.

Will Hurd, Brian Chesky, Bret Taylor, and Larry Summers put aside their lives and work extremely hard to support our mission. I don't know how they do it so well, but they do. Thanks.

Ollie put his own life on hold the entire time to help us in any way he could and, as always, offered his unconditional love and support. Thank you and I love you.

What’s next?

We have three immediate priorities.

  • Advance our research initiatives and further invest in the full-stack security efforts that have been critical to our work. Our research roadmap is clear; this is an excellent time to focus. I'm as excited as you all; we're going to turn crisis into opportunity! I will work with Mira on this.

  • Continue to improve and deploy our products to serve our customers. It is important that people can experience the benefits and promise of AI and have the opportunity to shape it. We continue to believe that great products are the best way to achieve this goal. I will work with Brad, Jason and Anna to ensure our unwavering commitment to our users, customers, partners and governments around the world is clear.

  • Bret, Larry, and Adam will work to accomplish the critically important task ofbuilding a diverse Board of Directors and improving our governance structure, and oversee an independent review of recent events. I look forward to working closely with them on these crucial steps to ensure everyone has confidence in the stability of OpenAI.

I very much look forward to working with you all to build the work that benefits AGI – the best team in the world, the best mission in the world.

Love you guys,

Himself

Here is a letter from Bret to everyone:

On behalf of the OpenAI Board of Directors, I want to express my gratitude to the entire OpenAI community, and especially to all OpenAI employees who have worked together over the past week to find a path forward for the company. Your efforts help this incredible organization continue to fulfill its mission to ensure that general artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity. We are excited for Sam, Mira and Greg to once again work together to lead the company and drive it forward. We look forward to working with them and all of them.

As a Board of Directors, we are committed to strengthening OpenAI’s corporate governance. Here's what we plan to do:

  • We will build a qualified, diverse board of directors that includes outstanding individuals whose collective experience represents the breadth of OpenAI’s mission—from technology to security to policy. We are pleased that this board will include a non-voting Microsoft observer.

  • We will further stabilize the OpenAI organization so that we can continue to fulfill our mission. This will include convening an independent committee of the board to oversee a review of recent events.

  • We will enhance OpenAI’s governance structure so that all stakeholders—users, customers, employees, partners, and community members—can trust that OpenAI will continue to thrive.

OpenAI is an institution that is more important than ever. ChatGPT makes artificial intelligence a part of daily life for hundreds of millions of people. Its popularity has put artificial intelligence—its benefits and risks—at the center of nearly every conversation about the future of government, business, and society.

We understand the importance of these discussions and the central role OpenAI plays in the development and security of these amazing new technologies. Each of you plays a key role in ensuring we respond effectively to these challenges. We are committed to listening to you and learning from you, and I hope to speak with all of you soon.

We are honored to be a part of OpenAI and look forward to working with you all.

Thanks! ‍

Bret Taylor
