These habits made me a senior project manager

Hello everyone, I am Lao Yuan.

Every boss has different habits of each boss. But there are commonalities among the outstanding bosses.

When we take their commonality as a "habit" to train ourselves, is it possible to train ourselves to be a big boss?

It's like you didn't know how to pre-set risks at the beginning, and the communication and team coordination were not good enough;

Some people can avoid risks, interpersonal communication and team management are all at their fingertips, the whole project goes smoothly, and there are no major problems...

Do you think he can be so 6 from the beginning? In fact, it's all instinct after doing too much.

But when you become proficient on the road and become an old driver, you can even listen to songs while driving and chat with friends without too much problem.

When "skills" become "instincts" and "acquired" become "inherent habits", you win.

This is what Lao Yuan wants to talk about today:

1. As a project manager, what subconscious habits do you usually have?

2. Are these habits good or bad?

3. What habits do you need to be a good manager?
1. What habits are good habits for project managers?

01 backup

Whether you are a clerk, a programmer, or a project manager, backing up and backing up is really an important habit.

After all, most project managers not only need to know how to maintain backups of a lot of data and project conditions, but often, the company's website or some systems must also be updated and backed up. Guaranteeing data loss is an essential skill for us.

You may think that this is a daily operation, what should be specially cultivated? Sometimes, it is easy to be ignored because it is too routine, and some bad situations may occur.

02 Plan your own career development route

You see, the main job of the project manager is to control the key nodes of the project, reasonably predict and avoid risks, etc. Occasionally, when necessary, you may need to communicate with the technology about some variable programming issues, and it is only limited to the stage you understand. Right.

Then why do I always see some people advocating that "project managers should learn technology well, and if they don't know technology, they can't be project managers..."?

To plan your own career development route, the premise is to clearly understand what you want at this stage. Don't follow your feelings, and you will always go astray into an alley you don't know.

In the long run, "deep cultivation" at a certain point is the stable guarantee for doubling wages.

It is not bad to learn various skills frequently and extensively, but at this stage, is the most important thing for you is to learn skills or to increase salary? Or is it a skill to learn for a salary increase?

Don't put the cart before the horse, otherwise you will always be a novice in the industry in the end.

01  Clarify your own value, and then check for gaps

If you can clarify your current value at work, and you can invest in yourself with learning in your spare time to increase your value in the workplace, you don’t have to worry about your low salary at this stage, only seven or eight thousand , the work is complicated, you have to do everything, and you have to be a housekeeper.

Because, when your ability reaches a certain level, your value is magnified, and those "opportunities" will automatically find you and give you the value you deserve.

For example, if you are obsessed with technology, study hard, keep your ears to the outside world, and just want to improve your business ability, but you find that you have been unable to get promoted, and there is not much floating salary increase, at this time you should Stop and look at yourself, why didn't you achieve the goal you expected? After thinking about it for a long time, I can't figure it out?

It doesn't matter, let's find a frame of reference, um, for example, another technology that has just been promoted in the same department, how does he do it? "His skills are not as good as mine!" is an evaluation that many technical people will subconsciously give, but why was he promoted?

I guess, it is probably because his "comprehensive value" is higher than yours.

How to say?

Your technical ability may be very skilled, but compared with him, you lack the comprehensive value of "upward communication", "good management", "strong organizational ability", "business ability" and so on. The company and leaders will feel "Ah! This is The person I need at this stage, the person who can share for me."

That's why there was a gap between the two of you. Thoughts lead to actions, actions lead to results, and results lead to good success.

In this era, people who continue to add value to themselves will never be treated badly, clarify their own value, and then check for gaps and fill in gaps. You must pay attention to skills other than technology.

2. Which habits project managers should change now

01 Rely on certificates to prove your ability

It has to be said that some official certifications have been overhyped by too many organizations, causing many novice Xiaobai to think that a certificate can travel the world, so there have been a large number of newcomers who have been certified for the purpose of research.

Lao Yuan feels that his attitude towards PMI certification is still objective. It is possible to take the test, and it is very satisfying to pass the test, but it does not mean that you can go sideways.

Certification can indeed prove your ability to a certain extent, but isn't the most authentic ability not every project you have taken over, the projects you will do, and the achievements you have made?

A certificate with official certification will allow you to successfully win the offer, but it will not allow you to be promoted and paid forever. To prove your ability, in addition to certificates, you still have to rely on your own accumulated experience step by step.

Many novices study certification with the mentality of "I can get a high salary with PMP certification", which is very undesirable.

I often meet some novice Internet workers who tell me that they have won the PMP/NPDP certificate, but the work is still very difficult, and the certificates are all deceptive.

Isn't this putting the cart before the horse?

Obtaining a certificate for the sake of obtaining a certificate, swallowing the knowledge, passing the exam by luck, looking back at a certain process, eh? What did the teacher say at the beginning? I'm completely dumbfounded, I still don't understand!

Don't let yourself lower the level of certification.

02 Habitually complete all work manually

It's the era of big automation. If you can do it manually, don't do it manually. Improving office efficiency is not only the yearning of clerks, but also the yearning of all workers.

The network is like wifi. When there is no fault, no one is aware of its existence. Once there is a fault, the first sentence is "Is there a problem with the network?" Network engineers are mostly blamed for this reason.

Have you never thought about using some automated functions to free your hands and reduce the rate of blame?

For example, the completion of key indicators, is it easier to optimize and improve?

For example, process records, is there any possibility of application? How sweet it is to directly optimize and apply to the next project.

3. As a project manager, Lao Yuan has been adhering to several habits

For example, I am a project management practitioner. My habits must be developed based on this identity. At the same time, good habits are also reflected in this identity to help me work better and grow.

01 Continuous accumulation, 15% more

This is a very interesting little habit. I saw it by accident two years ago and then started to stick to it. Because it is so good, I want to share it with you.

The "15% possibility" is the same as the ABZ plan mentioned before. Leave more possibilities for yourself, and surprises may appear.

For example, I started writing to share various project management experiences and insights, and output valuable things. After working for many years, I regained my sense of value and mission.

The purpose and sense of mission of your life come from a certain inadvertent, small "15% possibility".

02 Prepare for a rainy day and prevent it from happening

Try to arrange things thoughtfully, make various risk estimates in advance, and never go to others to settle accounts after things happen.

Now this habit is not only at work, but also in my life. It can be regarded as an occupational disease.

03 Try to avoid letting yourself get stuck in habits and experiences, goal and result oriented

This is still an occupational disease. The success of the project manager must be the success of the project. There is no way to catch fish, but the mission must be achieved.

But doing management is often easy to get stuck in habits and experience, so I try to avoid using habits to think about problems.

I will try to allow myself to be flexible to do what is needed at any time, and to do things that can help myself and the team achieve success.

Do what you can do to succeed, don't care about whether it is important or not, moving forward is better than standing still. This sentence is for friends who feel that they are procrastinating.

04 Lifelong learning, always keep yourself as a student

Every industry is changing with each passing day. As a project manager, to be in charge of a project well, you must constantly update and iterate your knowledge. It feels like you're falling behind if you're not careful.

So every morning, I have to read 15 minutes of industry information, and I have also taken the certification certificate of the project management industry, learned the world's advanced management methods, and constantly updated and iterated my knowledge reserve.
