Recently, Levels.fyi, a data collection website for American technology companies, released a report on the income of global programmers for the first half of 2023, and conducted an in-depth analysis of the salaries of various companies.
Total compensation mentioned in the report, including salary, stock and bonuses. (The website Levels.fyi was established in 2017 and has more than 100,000 data points in more than 1,500 cities around the world. The data is relatively authoritative and accurate.)
According to the Levels.fyi software engineer grading framework, the report divides engineers into 5 levels: junior engineer; intermediate engineer; senior engineer; supervisor engineer; chief engineer.
Overall trend: Salary increases for most positions
Overall, job titles that saw significant increases included software engineering managers and technical program managers , with median total compensation increases of 5 percent and 4.8 percent , respectively .
But not all positions have received a salary increase, for example:
Median total compensation for software engineers remained unchanged at $170,000;
Median total compensation for salespeople fell 0.3 per cent;
Some focus areas such as Security, Production, Site Reliability (SRE) and iOS saw small changes or slight decreases in median total compensation;
Median total compensation for blockchain engineers faced a massive -11.3% decline.
It is noteworthy that in some professional key areas, the salary of software engineers shows a positive growth trend.
In part, in the field of augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR), the median total salary growth rate of software engineers is as high as 14.5%.
In the other part, in the fields of distributed systems (backend), DevOps, full stack, ML/AI and mobile (iOS + Android), the median total salary of software engineers has also continued to grow.
In the list of junior and intermediate engineers, Databricks took the top spot
The report shows that in the ranking of junior engineers, the unified data analysis platform Databricks ranks first, with a median total salary of $274,200. In 2022, Databricks ranks sixth, with a median total compensation of $221,000.
Among the top three, Flexport and Snowflake also offer competitive compensation packages, with a median total compensation of $225,000 each.
The following companies are LinkedIn, the world's largest professional networking platform, Waymo, an American self-driving technology development company, Cruise, an American self-driving car company, and Stripe, a payment service provider.
Overall, the median total compensation for junior engineers is more than $210,000. However, compared with last year, the overall salary of the listed companies has declined. In addition, the quantitative giant Two Sigma, which topped the list last year, is nowhere to be seen.
In the ranking of mid-level engineers, Databricks ranked first with a median total salary of $385,850. But that's down from the median total compensation of $443,000 in 2022.
Although the median total compensation of the listed companies as a whole has generally decreased, it is worth mentioning that the video game platform ROBLOX ranked second with a median total compensation of $370,000 after ranking third last year.

In the ranking of senior engineers, there is a certain difference in the median total salary of the top three, namely: Databricks, Netflix, and ROBLOX.
It is worth mentioning that Netflix, which ranked third last year, ranked second this year with $550,000, while ROBLOX entered the list from last year's list .
Compared with last year, the overall salary level of senior engineers has increased.
In the ranking of executive engineers, OpenAI ranked first with a median total salary of $925,000, and last year it was just a "nobody."
It is worth mentioning that OpenAI, as an artificial intelligence company jointly established by many Silicon Valley tycoons, became famous in the first battle with the rapid "out of the circle" of ChatGPT and GPT-4.
This sky-high salary is mainly aimed at software engineers with 10 years of work experience, and its salary structure includes: a basic salary of $300,000 + an "equity" of $625,000. Among them, "equity" is not issued on an annual basis, but employees receive it every 4 years.
Overall, the median total salaries of executive engineers on the list are above US$660,000, a significant increase from last year.
Among the chief engineers, Facebook has jumped to the first place from the second place in 2021, and its position is unshakable, with a median total salary of $978,000. However, compared with the median total compensation of US$1.04 million last year, there is a clear downward trend.
In addition, Apple, Google, and Microsoft, which are also Silicon Valley giants, did not appear in the rankings.
