The technology is very good, and I can't speak PPT, what a pity!

How can we do a technology sharing? Combined with my experience, I made some conclusions.

In 2015, after I published "The Top of Technology Management", I received invitations from QCon, CSDN, IT168 and other industry-renowned technology conferences to serve as guest speakers. Over the past few years, I have published nearly a hundred technology and management related topics. Anxious enough to talk eloquently, walking step by step, I have a lot of feelings.

To sum up, preparing for a technology sharing can be divided into six parts: topic selection preparation, overcoming tension, exquisite opening, how to speak, how to perform, and question-and-answer sessions.

First, topic preparation

The key to topic selection is the angle, and the trick is that I have what others do not have, and I am new to what others have. It is necessary to decompose the theme from the perspective of your own industry and company. For example, in a blockchain technical salon, you can choose topics based on your company’s business characteristics. For example, blockchain combined with e-commerce, logistics, and finance is a good topic. You can talk about the role of blockchain in e-commerce. The practice of the industry, the application of blockchain in the traceability of agricultural products, the exploration of blockchain in the field of financial credit investigation, etc.

The content of technology sharing is mainly dry goods, cases, scenarios, and exploration, and it is strictly forbidden to talk about ideas. Technicians are very pragmatic, and the tolerable time for an hour of sharing will not exceed 15 minutes. If the content is empty and the concept is exaggerated, everyone will "vote with their feet". If you continue to talk, there will be very few audiences in the audience up.

Each page of the speech materials only talks about one topic, and with audio, video and other multimedia materials, it is appropriate to talk about 1 to 3 minutes per page.

Second, overcome the tension

It is inevitable to be nervous when speaking in public. Even a seasoned public speaker can feel nervous, so you must face up to your nervousness. This is not your personal problem. Everyone is nervous. Before giving a speech, we have to be fully prepared and know what we are going to say, so that we will be full of confidence. Most of the nervousness comes from lack of preparation.

Speech is the same as other skills, practice makes perfect, so if you want to speak more, you can find a quiet place to speak into the air, you can record the speaking process, and then listen to it repeatedly to check your speaking speed and smooth expression. If it is easy to forget words during the speaking process, you can list the key points in the PPT as a reminder.

Third, an exquisite opening

There is an old saying: A good start is half the battle. So, how do you define a good opening statement? The so-called good opening remarks are the right time, the right place, the right person, and a suitable sentence. To put it more bluntly, this opening sentence is only applicable to the present moment, and it is not applicable to another occasion.

For example, once I participated in a technical salon, the organizer arranged it quite innovatively on a yacht. Looking at the beautiful scenery on both sides of the Huangpu River, I suddenly thought of an opening sentence: We are lucky to be here today. It can be said that we have accumulated a hundred years of fate. As soon as the voice fell, it won warm applause. Many years have passed, and I met a friend in the industry. He told me that he still remembered the opening sentence I said when I gave a speech, but he couldn't remember the other sharing content.

It can be seen that a suitable opening sentence can become a long-term memory point, which will remain in people's minds and will not be forgotten for a long time. The classic speeches in history also have wonderful opening remarks. For example, Jobs was invited to participate in the Stanford University graduation speech, "Today, I am honored to participate in your graduation ceremony. Stanford University is one of the best universities in the world. I didn’t graduate from college, and to be honest, today may be the closest I’ve ever been to graduating from college.” His sincere and wise opening remarks won rounds of applause from everyone.

Fourth, how to speak

The speaking speed of the speech should be moderate and steady, don't be fast and slow, and the words should be clear. Technicians are not professional announcers, as long as the speech can convey the intention, it is enough. In addition, pay attention to overcoming the colloquial words in your usual speech, such as "um", "ah", "then", etc., if they appear too much in the speech, it will make people feel that the expression is not smooth.

During the speech, tell more case stories that are usually summarized, and help everyone understand the idea you want to express through the story scene. For example, when talking about the importance of operation and maintenance work, it can be said that operation and maintenance work affects the family harmony of thousands of households. Why do you say that? If the operation and maintenance engineer of an e-commerce website accidentally shakes his hand, the network cable is dropped, and the app cannot place an order. At this time, the mother in a certain family will be very upset and take out his anger on his father. When the child is happy, he will scold the child, and the child will go to the grandma to complain. When the grandma is upset, she will scold the daughter-in-law for only focusing on swiping her mobile phone to buy and buy. Regardless of the child, the family will be in chaos. This is called "kicking the cat effect".

Telling technology through stories is a very important way of expression in speeches.

At the same time, you can also tell some interesting jokes and humorous expressions, which will also add a lot to your speech. There are many people who understand technology, but very few people who understand technology and can speak, and there are very few people who understand technology and can speak interestingly.

Fifth, how to act

Proper use of body language can help us express ourselves better, and can fully demonstrate our personal charm. But be careful to avoid the following three points:

First, try not to turn your back on the audience. It is considered impolite to turn your back to the audience on many occasions, except for some special shows. If you don't remember the content of the speech and need to turn around and look at the PPT, try to shorten the time as much as possible.

Second, don't be immobile. When giving a speech, it is appropriate to walk on the stage in a horizontal direction facing the audience. In layman's terms, it means shaking back and forth in front of the audience, which helps to attract the attention of the audience and shorten the distance between you and the audience. Unless the mic is stationary, walking around is still recommended.

Finally, don't use impolite body language. Regardless of your presentation style, refraining from using body language or gestures that offend the audience in public is not only a sign of personal accomplishment, but also of a person's moral standard.

Sixth, Q&A session

The question-and-answer session is the link that most tests a speaker's adaptability. Some speakers have excellent speeches, but the question-and-answer session is not up to standard. At least, they are considered "parallel importers" by the audience, and at worst, it will affect the image of the company and the conference.

The question-and-answer session has the following coping skills:

1) How to buy time for yourself . If you need some time to think about an audience question, ask the audience to repeat the question, or repeat the question yourself while doing a quick mental draft. If you don't know, I understand correctly, the question you want to ask is...

2) How to answer questions that you don't know . When encountering a question that you do not know, you can directly express that you have not considered this question, and at the same time ask the audience if anyone wants to try to answer this question. Don't pretend to understand what you don't know, I believe the audience will be moved by your honesty.

3) How to answer questions that are not convenient for you to answer . If there are some issues that may involve sensitive business information of the company, it is not convenient to talk about them in public, so you can tell the audience that this issue involves relevant company regulations, and it is not convenient to discuss your position, or you can ask the audience to contact you privately.

The above explains how to make an "interesting and informative" technical speech from six aspects. The last thing to say is that speech ability cannot be improved through reading, but needs to be continuously improved through actual combat exercises. With deliberate practice, you too can become a master speaker.

The above content is excerpted from the best-selling book "The Way of Technical People's Cultivation", the author Huang Zhekeng, who once served as the technical director of Yihaodian, the vice president of technology of Yiyao. Internet large-scale system research and development, large-scale technical team governance, blockchain innovation, etc.
