6.8 Insert a chart in a cell using the sparkline function [Original Excel Tutorial]

1. This lesson will demonstrate the use of sparklines. Sparkline is a brand-new chart making tool, which uses cells as the drawing area, and can draw concise data charts for users simply and conveniently. 



2. Click the Insert tab to display the Insert function panel. 


3. Click the [Line Chart] button in the panel to open the Create Sparklines window. 


4. In the pop-up Create Sparkline window, click the Data Range Pick button to select the data source for creating the sparkline. 


5. Press the mouse on cell C29 and slide to cell H29 to select this area as the data source for the sparkline. 


6. Then click the Pick button to the right of [Position Range] to select the cell to place the sparkline. 


7. Click on cell I29 to select this cell as the cell to place the sparkline. 


8. Continue to click the Pick button to complete the selection of the location range. 


9. Finally click the OK button to create a sparkline. 


10. Now that a sparkline has been created based on the corresponding data, click the style drop-down arrow to bring up a list of sparkline styles. 


11. In the Sparkline style list, click to select a sparkline style, and observe the change in the appearance of the sparkline in cell I29. 


12. Click the [Sparkline Color] drop-down arrow to pop up the Theme Colors panel. 


13. In the Theme Colors panel, click to select a color to use as the sparkline line color. 


14. Next, in the [Display] command group, check the [High Points] checkbox to display high data points on the sparkline. 


15. Continue to tick the [Low Points] checkbox to display low data points on the sparkline. 


16. Click again to uncheck the [Low Points] checkbox to undisplay low data points on the sparkline. 


17. Click again to uncheck the [High Points] checkbox to undisplay high data points on the sparkline. 


18. Next check the [First Point] checkbox to display the first data point on the sparkline. 


19. Continue to tick the [Tail point] checkbox to display the first data point on the sparkline. 


20. Continue to tick the [Negative Points] checkbox to display data points with negative values ​​on the sparkline. 


21. Then click the [Marker] color drop-down arrow to open the Marker Type list. 


22. Select the Negative Dot option in the list to open the Negative Dot Theme Colors list. 


23. In the Theme Colors list, click to select a color to use as the color for negative data points. 


24. Click to uncheck the [Negative Points] checkbox to suppress the display of negative data points on the sparkline. 


25. Continue clicking to uncheck the [Tail Points] checkbox to undisplay the tail data points on the sparkline. 


26. Click to uncheck the [First Point] checkbox to undisplay the first data point on the sparkline. 


27. Next check the [Marker] checkbox to display all marker data points on the sparkline. 


28. Click the [Marker] Color drop-down arrow again to open the Marker Type list. 


29. Select the Marker option in the list to open the Marker Theme Color list. 


30. In the Theme Colors list, click to select a color as the marker color. 


31. Click the Sparkline Color drop-down arrow to pop up the Sparkline Colors panel. 


32. Then click the [Thickness -> 2.25 pt] option in turn, adjust the width of the sparkline line, and observe the change of the sparkline line.

34. Click the [Axes] drop-down arrow to open the Axes options menu. 


35. Select the [Show Axes] option in the menu to display the axes in the sparkline. 


36. Click the [Axis] drop-down arrow to open the axis options menu again. 


37. Select the [Plot data from right to left] option in the menu to reverse the direction of the sparkline data points. 


38. Use the keyboard shortcuts to undo the previous action. 


39. Next, in the [Type] command group, click the column chart icon to change the chart type of the current sparkline. 


40. Continue to click the P&L icon to change the chart type for the current sparkline. 


41. Now click the [Start] tab to display the Start function panel. 


42. In the Clipboard command group, click the Copy button to copy the current sparkline. 


43. Then click to select cell I31. 


44. Click the Paste icon in the Clipboard command group to paste the copied sparkline into the current cell. 


45. You will find that the sparkline is like a formula, when pasted into cell I31, it shows the trend change of the data in row 31. Press the keyboard shortcut to hide the blinking copy box. 


46. ​​Then click the Design tab to enter the Design function panel. 


47. If you need to clear the sparkline, just click the Clear button. Click the Clear button here to clear the sparkline for the current cell and end this lesson.
