I wrote a tutorial on how to install Ubuntu using MS Hyper-v before , here is a tutorial on how to install Linux using Vmware. (ps: The experience of Hyper-v is not very good, and it is not popular enough)
1. Preparation
1.1 Download the system image
To install the Linux system, first we need to download the relevant system image, here we choose Ubuntu, and other systems are similar to the installation. We need to go to the Ubuntu official website to download the system image, I chose 64-bit Ubuntu 17.10.
1.2 Install Vmware Workstation
Because we want to use Vmware for Linux virtual machine installation, Vmware is essential.
At this point our preparations are done.
2. Create a virtual machine
Open our installed Vmware Workstation, click [File] -> [New Virtual Machine], as shown in the following figure.
Then we select [Custom Installation]
Here we select [Install the operating system later].
Here we choose Ubuntu 64 bit
Because the blogger's computer only has 4G memory, the default 1G is selected here, which is enough for daily use.
The blogger has only one 256G SSD, which is also allocated here by the default 20G.
Then select where the disk files are stored.
Then select the system image file to be installed, and click the red box.
3. Start installing Ubuntu 17.10
Click [Start Virtual Machine].
Then wait to enter the official installation interface.
Click [Install Ubuntu], if you select [Try Ubuntu], it is just a trial and will not be installed.
If you choose the first one here, the original content of the disk will be cleared, because the virtual disk used to install the virtual machine here is just created and there is nothing in it, we can just click [Continue] to continue.
Choose the location, here in China, you can only choose (shanghai) Shanghai, you can click on the map or enter shanghai to choose.
Next, select the keyboard layout, here the blogger chooses English (US). Then click [Continue] to continue the installation. (If you can't understand [Continue] because the interface display is incomplete, you can use the mouse to drag the interface.)
Enter the personal user name, host name and other information here, and then click [Continue] to continue the installation.
Then wait for the installation to complete.
After the installation is complete, we will be asked to restart the virtual machine, click [Restart Now]. After restarting we can use it.
