GNOME User Experience Team will provide more improvements to GNOME Shell

GNOME 3.36 was just released last month, and the GNOME user experience team has now made efforts to improve GNOME 3.38, which will be released in the fall , hoping to further improve the user experience on the desktop.

Allan Day, a member of the GNOME user experience team, shared some of the areas they have been working with to improve further in GNOME Shell. Some of the areas for further improvement under discussion include:

  • Improved grid launcher for applications
  • Improve the spatial organization of Activities Overview on GNOME Shell
  • Improve the display content of GNOME desktop after system startup
  • Improve touchpad navigation and gesture handling

App launch

Improve the application grid launcher to ensure that the most frequently used / probably used applications appear first, rather than in alphabetical order. In addition, user experience designers also want to make it "more attractive and personalized."

Improve the space organization of Activities Overview

The familiar layout method is: the window thumbnail of the currently running application in the middle, the dash bar on the left, the search box at the top, and the work area on the right. The GNOME User Experience team hopes to further improve the layout and better communicate the relationship between the different elements, especially in terms of navigation.

Improved initial desktop display

The GNOME User Experience team wants to avoid empty Activity Overview and empty desktop when booting into the new GNOME desktop environment.

Improve touchpad navigation and gesture handling

The team hopes to be able to use the touchpad to navigate between different areas of the desktop using the same set of gestures (especially application launch and search).
