When he began his self-imposed （自己决定的）exile（流放） to Washington last year, Jamal Khashoggi described himself simply as one "independent（独立） journalist using his pen for the good （利益，好处）of his country（国家利益）." With his brutal （野蛮的，残忍的）killing in Turkey this month, the Saudi （沙特）journalist became much more: the Arab world's symbol （象征）for the cause （事业，目标）of free expression（言论自由）.

In their effort（努力，试图） to silence（安静，闭嘴） the 59-year-old writer, Saudi officials eliminated（抹掉，谋杀） a domestic（国内） nuisance（麻烦的人或物） who had angered（激怒） the country's de facto（事实上的） ruler（统治者）, Crown Prince （王储）Mohammed bin Salman. After two weeks of denials（否认）, the Saudi government acknowledged（承认） early Saturday（周六） that Khashoggi had died violently（激烈的） inside the country's diplomatic consulate（外交领事馆） in Istanbul.

Khashoggi moved easily within the highest circles（圈子，阶层） of Saudi politics. He was a strident （强硬的）critic of Islamist extremism（伊斯兰极端主义）, and he spent his later years（晚年） championing （支持某物，为某物做斗争）liberal causes（自由事业） such as women's rights and freedom of expression in Muslim societies. He considered himself to be a fierce （狂热的）Saudi patriot（爱国主义者）, friends say.

Some Arab dissidents （持不同政见者）distrusted him because of his close ties with senior government officials. But over time（时境过迁）, it was the Saudi establishment that turned on （+人 突然发动攻击）he journalist, moving first to shut down his publishing platforms in the Arab peninsula, and then to crush （粉碎，镇压）him.

Ironically（讽刺的是）, Khashoggi had never sought (seek)to be a disrupter（扰乱的人） and instead, had been an advocate （倡导，拥护）for modest（适度的） reform within the system. He argued（提出） simply that his fellow （同类的，伙伴的）Arabs deserved （应得）the "right to speak their minds without fear of imprisonment（监禁）," as he wrote in a Washington Post column in April.
