A warm welcome to you. Thank you for stopping by. I am here to share a stunning TED talk of less than 4 minutes that compiles the secrets of success in 8 words. Richard St. John was asked by a not-so well-to-do girl on a plane “What is the secret to success?” To answer this question, Richard interviewed 500 successful people from TED for 7 years.
The 8 secrets are:
- Passion: Freeman Thomas (car designer, Diamler Chrysler) says, “I’m driven by my passion.“. Carol Coletta (radio producer, Smart City) says, “I would pay someone to do what I do.” Successful people do it for love, money comes along the way.
- Work: Rupert Murdoch (big cheese CEO) said, “It’s all hard work. Nothing comes easily. But I have a lot of fun.“
- Good: Alex Garden (game developer) says, “To be successful, put your nose down in something and get damn good at it.” There is no magic. It’s just Practice, Practice, Practice.
- Focus: Norman Jewison (filmmaker) said, “I think it all has to do with focusing yourself on one thing.” 3
- Push: David Gallo (marine scientist) says, “Push yourself. Physically, mentally, you’ve got to push, push, push.” You’ve got to push through shyness and self-doubt. Goldie Hawn (actor) says, “I always had self-doubts. I wasn’t good enough, wasn’t smart enough. I didn’t think I’d make it.” Now, it’s not always easy to push yourself, so they invented mothers. Frank Gehry (architect) said, “My mother pushed me.“
- Serve: Sherwin Nuland (professor of surgery, Yale) said, “It was a privilege to serve as a doctor“. Millionaires serve others something of value.
- Ideas: Bill Gates says, “I had an idea – founding the first micro-computer software company.” There is no magic to creativity and coming up with ideas, it’s just doing some very simple things – Listen, Observe, Be curious, Ask questions, Problem solve, Make connections.
- Persist: Joe Kraus (co-founder, Excite) says,”Persistence is the number one reason for success.” You’ve got to persist through failure, persist through Crap (Criticism, Rejection, Assholes, Pressure).Richard-St-John-8-Secrets-of-success
