  CentOS 8 officially released! ! ! CentOS full compliance with Red Hat's redistribution policy and is committed to fully compatible with upstream products in functionality. CentOS mainly changes packages and artwork are trademarks of Red Hat's removal.

  The release also includes a new CentOS Streams, Centos Stream is a rolling release Linux distribution, which exists between developed between the upstream and downstream development of Fedora Linux RHEL's. You can put as CentOS Streams is a version to experience the latest features of Red Hat Linux system, without having to wait too long.

  CentOS 8 major changes and  RedHat Enterprise Linux 8  is the same, and based on Fedora 28 kernel version 4.18, to provide users with a stable, secure and consistent basis, across the hybrid cloud deployments, supporting traditional and emerging workload required tool. The release highlights include:

  Release

  • By  BaseOS  and application flow ( AppStream warehouse release).
  • AppStream  is a new extension to the traditional format of rpm, is a major component provides multiple versions simultaneously

  Software Management

  • YUM  package manager based  DNF  technology to provide a modular content support, enhanced performance, and provides well-designed API for integration with other tools

  Shell and command line tools

  • RHEL 8 provides version control tools:  Git 2.18Mercurial 4.8, and  Subversion 1.10.

  Dynamic programming languages, Web and database servers

  • Python 3.6 Python is the default environment, limited support for Python 2.7 
  • Node.js Is included in the latest RHEL, other dynamic languages updates include:  PHP 7.2, Ruby  2. 5Perl 5.26SWIG 3.0 
  • Database services RHEL 8 include: MariaDB 10.3MySQL 8.0PostgreSQL 10PostgreSQL 9.6, and  Redis 5.
  • RHEL 8 provides Apache HTTP Server 2.4 as well as first introduced  nginx 1.14.
  • Squid Upgrade to version 4.4, as well as the first time Varnish Cache 6.0.

  Desktop Environment

  • GNOME Shell  to upgrade to 3.28.
  • GNOME Display Manager session and use  Wayland  as the default display server, and the default RHEL 7  X.Org  Server still offer

  • Anaconda  installer can use  LUKS2  disk encryption, support  NVDIMM  equipment.
  • Image Builder  tool to create a custom system images in different formats, including a variety of formats to meet the cloud platform
  • HMC Hardware Management Console supports installing from a DVD, while also providing IBM Z mainframe Element Support ( SE

  Kernel

  • Packet Filtering extend the Berkeley ( eBPF)  characteristic such that the upper space of each point of the user's additional custom program, including (sockets, trace points, packet reception ), for receiving and processing data. Currently this feature is still in the preview stage properties
  • Compiler Collection BPF ( BCC ), which is used to create a kernel trace and efficient operation of the tool, currently in the technology preview stage

  File Systems and Storage

  • Version 2 LUKS ( LUKS2 ) replace the old format LUKS (LUKS1) format.  dm-crypt Subsystems and  cryptsetup tools are now used as the default encryption LUKS2 Volume Format

  Safety

  • The default system-level  encryption policy , the encryption used to configure the core subsystems, covering TLS, IPsec, SSH, DNSSEC, and the Kerberos protocol. The new order increases update-crypto-policies, administrators can easily switch between different modes: default, legacy, future, and fips.
  • Support for smart cards and hardware security module ( HSM ) of the  PKCS # 11

  The internet

  • nftables Substitute frame  iptables as the default network packet filtering tool
  • firewalld Daemon uses  nftables as the default backend
  • Support  IPVLAN  virtual network driver for connecting a plurality of containers
  • the Data Path eXpress ( XDP ), XDP for Traffic Control ( tc ), as well as the Data Path eXpress Family Address ( AF_XDP ), Packet Filtering can be used as part of the Berkeley ( eBPF)  extended features, is still a technology preview stage, details see  Section 5.3.7 , "Networking" .

  Virtualization

  • RHEL8 in a virtual machine created, and now supports automatic configuration and more modern PCI Express-based computer type (Q35). It offers a variety of improvements in functionality and compatibility virtual devices.
  • You can now use RHEL8Web console (also called the "cockpit") to create and manage virtual machines.
  • qemu emulator introduces a sandbox function, which provides configurable limits qemu call operation can be performed for the system, so that the virtual machines more secure.

  Compilers and development tools

  • GCC  compiler version 8.2 update to support more C ++ standard, better optimization and code enhancements, warnings, and hardware features to enhance support
  • Different code generation, operation and debugging tools can now handle  DWARF5  Debug Information Format (experience phase)
  • Core support  eBPF  tool for debugging include BCCPCP, and  SystemTap.
  • glibc Library upgrade to 2.28 supports Unicode 11, the updated Linux system calls, mainly to enhance the key in DNS stub resolver, additional security enhancements and performance improvements
  • RHEL 8 provided OpenJDK 11, OpenJDK 8, IcedTea- Web, as well as the different  Java  tools, such as  AntMaven, or  Scala.

  High availability and clustering

  • Pacemaker  cluster resource manager to update to the latest version 2.0.0, a series of bug fixes and feature upgrade done
  • pcs  configure the system fully supports 3 Corosync,  knet, and node name
