Full disk backup of Ubuntu system - installation and use of TimeShift

Timeshift uses a full backup method to directly package the backup of the entire operating system, including personal configuration. That is a full disk backup.

Operation process

Execute the commands in sequence:

sudo apt-add-repository -y ppa:teejee2008/ppa
sudo apt update
sudo apt install timeshift

After opening the software, there will be some initialization settings, just keep clicking Next. Some of them can depend on the configuration of your computer. Depending on the memory size of your computer, decide whether to back up automatically or manually.

In the final Finish, you will see the following interface:

The bottom means that there will be no automatic backup and manual operation is required.

Click Create in the upper left corner to perform the backup operation.

So if you accidentally die one day and are lucky enough to still be able to open the GNOME desktop and Timeshift (as long as you are not executing a suicide program like sudo rm -f /*), click on the backup file you want to restore and then Click Restore, and your system will be successfully restored after a short restart.

Of course, for virtual machine users, there is no better way than directly copying the virtual disk file on the guest machine.
