Ubuntu installation and settings

Install Ubuntu

First install the VMware virtual machine. The installation of the virtual machine is relatively simple. Click Next to complete the installation step by step.
After the installation is complete, start the virtual machine and click to create a new virtual machine.

Select Typical in the pop-up window and click Next.
Insert image description here
Then select the installer CD image file in the pop-up window, click Browse to find the image file ubuntu-16.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso, and click Next.
Insert image description here
Fill in your full name, username, password, confirmation and other information in the pop-up window.
Insert image description here
Then set the name of the virtual machine and select a location with sufficient disk space.
Insert image description here
According to the capacity of your own disk, the maximum disk size here should be set as large as possible, because software will be installed in it later.
Insert image description here
Click Customize Hardware in the next pop-up window.
Insert image description here
Select the network adapter here, select the network connection as bridge mode, and click Close.
Insert image description here
Click Finish and wait for it to install.
Insert image description here
The installation process is relatively long, just wait patiently for the installation to complete.
Insert image description here
The installation is successful here. Enter the password set previously to enter the system.

Screen resolution settings

After entering, I found that the screen display was too small, as shown in the picture below.
Insert image description here
Click the settings icon in the upper right corner, then click System Settings to enter the settings, or directly click the settings icon on the left side of the screen to enter the settings interface, click Displays, and enter the window below. You can see that the resolution is set to a smaller size.
Insert image description here
Set a suitable resolution so that it can fully display the icons on the desktop.

Modify software source server

In order to install various software faster in Ubuntu later, the software source server is also modified here. Double-click Software&Updates in the settings interface and click the Other... option.
Insert image description here
Then click Select Best Server to test the fastest server. The prerequisite for this operation is that the virtual machine is connected to the Internet.
Insert image description here
You can also choose one directly under China without testing.
Insert image description here
After selecting, you will need to enter your password and click Verify.
Insert image description here
After the selection is successful, a URL will appear here in Download from, and subsequent software downloads will be downloaded through this server.

Lock screen time setting

Ubuntu will automatically lock the screen when it is not operated for a long time. The default time is 5 minutes. Sometimes you need to transfer some large files. Here, it is set to never lock the screen.
The setting method is to double-click Brightness & Lock in the settings interface, and then set the lock screen time to Never.

sudo dpkg-reconfigure dash

Press Enter and enter your password, and the following window will pop up.
Insert image description here
Switch to No, press the Enter key, and the terminal window prints the following information, indicating that the setting is successful.

Settings for dragging and copying files across systems

After the virtual machine was successfully installed, I dragged files from the Windows system to the virtual machine and found that it could not be copied. I clicked on the virtual machine in the menu bar and found that the option to install VMware Tools was gray.
At this time, you need to set the CD/DVD connection to use a physical drive in the virtual machine settings, as shown in the figure below.
Insert image description here
Under the virtual machine settings, go to the guest isolation option and make sure both items here are checked.
Insert image description here
If the above two items are checked at the beginning, uncheck them first, click OK to exit, enter the virtual machine settings again and check these two items, and then click OK to exit.
The above settings are all completed when the virtual machine is shut down. After the settings are completed and the virtual machine is started, the option to install VMware Tools will no longer be gray.
Insert image description here
Click to install VMware Tools. The following prompt will pop up at the bottom. Click to install Tools.
Insert image description here
The specific installation method pops up again.
Insert image description here
Wait for the VMware Tools folder to pop up automatically.
Insert image description here
Copy the installation package to a folder, then right-click the compressed package and click Extract Here to decompress it.
Open the terminal, go to the decompressed folder, and use the following command to install VMware Tools.

sudo ./vmware-install.pl

As shown in the picture below, I store the vmware tools file in the Downloads folder.
Insert image description here
After executing this command, restart the virtual machine. After the restart is complete, drag-and-drop copying across systems can be achieved.
I tried this process several times before I succeeded. During this process, I also uninstalled and installed the virtual machine. I feel that the more important point is: make relevant settings when the virtual machine is turned off, and then open the virtual machine to install VMware Tools. Do not install VMware Tools on the virtual machine. Do this with it turned on, as it may not work this way. Also, make sure your virtual machine is connected to the network!

The above is everything about Ubuntu installation and settings!
