Cable excavators feature robust components such as the superstructure, slewing ring and undercarriage. The chassis is the lower mechanical component used to move an excavator, guided by wheels or tracks, depending on size and model, and carries the rotating upper carriage. The slewing ring connects the upper and lower machine parts and allows the upper part to rotate. When carrying out maintenance work, the superstructure must be lifted from the chassis, which requires the help of hydraulics. 

In the application on the cable excavator shown in the picture, the Hongke Dimetix laser ranging sensor can ensure that the upper carriage is evenly lifted and lowered from the lower carriage during the work process . On the other hand, the parallelism of the upper trolley of the crawler crane in the raised state can be ensured during maintenance . This is achieved by a continuous touch signal activated by the laser ranging sensor at the placement deviation of the upper trolley . The interaction between the output signal and the activated hydraulics leads to a correction of the parallelism to the intended target state again.

Fast and precise measurements with combined methods

Conventional laser distance sensors use the time- of-flight measurement principle, or use the phase-shift measurement principle. Time-of-flight measurement is fast , but usually not accurate enough due to the high requirements of time measurement . Measurements of phase offsets are distance dependent and much more accurate , but more time consuming than pure time-of-flight measurements due to the more complex evaluation

Therefore, the sensor experts at Swiss company Dimetix AG took a different approach. Their laser ranging sensor essentially combines the best of both measurement methods by evaluating the time-of-flight principle and the phase principle .

In order to achieve high measurement speeds, this method uses high-frequency modulation of the laser amplitude and evaluates the phase and distance of these modulated high-frequency signals (pulse trains) . The amplitude modulations of the laser beam are spaced at short intervals, so not only the delay shift over distance of a single pulse packet can be quickly measured, but also the phase shift of the individual waveforms in the modulated packet can be measured.

At the same time, the sensor measures faster than usual , providing precise values ​​even over long distances . Depending on the type of device, Hongke Dimetix laser ranging sensors are suitable for  distances  from 0.05 to 500 meters , with a measurement accuracy of ±1 mm and a repeatability accuracy of  ±0.3 mm .
