What does a standard promotion PPT look like? The inside story of Internet workplace promotion! Want to get promoted and raise your salary? have to do this...

If you really want to get promoted and raise your salary smoothly, you have to start now and re-understand systematically what promotion is all about.

thing.

Interview Skills Guidance

You may think that "gold always shines", and as long as one's ability is achieved, promotion is a matter of course. After all, the judges have sharp eyes and rich experience, so they can naturally see your brilliance.

However, this is not the case in reality. Whether your ability is strong or not may not be so obvious to the judges. Because they don't have enough time and energy to fully examine you, they can only make a judgment on you through less than 2 hours of face-to-face evaluation.

The so-called "face-to-face evaluation" refers to the face-to-face communication during the evaluation stage, including writing PPT (preliminary material preparation), speaking PPT (promotion self-report), and defense (against the judges' questions). You will present evidence, answer questions and demonstrate to the judges that you have achieved the target level.

It can be said that your interview performance largely determines your promotion results. And if we rank the factors that affect the performance of face-to-face evaluation, your ability accounts for 50%, and face-to-face evaluation skills can account for 30% (do you remember what the remaining 20% is? Reminder: if you can’t think of it, you can Review Section 1.2).

Although the interview skills cannot help you pass the promotion if you are not capable; but if you are only capable but do not master the skills of the interview, it is very likely that you will fail to be promoted.

So in the face-to-face evaluation skills section, I will focus on several key links in the face-to-face evaluation to help you remind common misunderstandings and summarize practical experience. After finishing this part, you can fully demonstrate your ability and play to your due level.

In this talk, let's first take a look at what a standard promotion PPT looks like.

Common Misunderstandings of Promotion PPT

The promotion PPT is the key material you use to show your ability to the judges, which is very important. But how to write a good promotion PPT? Most have little experience. When I was a judge, I found that even for those who applied for promotion to P8, the PPT may not be very satisfactory.

According to my observation, applicants often fall into some misunderstandings when preparing to be promoted to PPT.

Misunderstanding 1: The more cool the form of promotion PPT, the better

Some people think that PPT is to be beautiful and cool, so a lot of charts and blocks are used. Things that can be clearly explained in a simple sentence or two should also use blocks to occupy a whole page of PPT. Even specially added some animation effects.

In fact, the beauty and coolness of the PPT is not the key, and sometimes it will become a burden, because the judges may think that your PPT is "not enough content, but the form is enough".

Myth 2: The more things that get promoted to the PPT column, the better

When summarizing their abilities, some people think that the more things they list, the more they can prove their abilities are strong, so they simply list all the things they have done and introduce them one by one.

I once met a Java server development classmate who applied for promotion to P7. He put all the 6 projects he had done, 5 online problems he had dealt with, 3 articles he had written, and his experience as a new employee mentor 4 times. Listed it out, even made a small tool in Python within the team, and spent 1 to 2 pages of PPT to introduce everything.

The final result was of course not passed, because the judges could not judge which abilities were his core abilities, which gave him a feeling that he "knows everything but is not good at everything". Friends who have participated in the interview should know that once the interviewer forms such an impression of you, it will probably be cool. In fact, the promotion defense is the same.

Misunderstanding 3: The more detailed the content of the promotion PPT, the better

Although some people know that the PPT should not list too many things, but to pick out a few main ones, but for the selected few things, the introduction is very detailed, and no details are missed. They may do this because they are worried that they will miss some things because of nervousness, or because they don't know what the jury is paying attention to, thinking that as long as they say everything, they can always step on the "score point".

There are two forms of this error. The first is that although the number of pages is small, the content of each page is particularly large.

It is densely packed with blocks and words, which almost drives people out of "mass phobia".

From the perspective of the judges, it is difficult to grasp the key points whether it is watching your PPT or listening to you directly. You think you have talked about 7~8 points, but it is likely that they can only remember 3~4 points after listening, and they don't know what the most important point is.

In addition, because different judges may remember different points, in the follow-up defense session, the questions they ask will be scattered, and you cannot give more points to multiple judges at the same time with one answer.

The second form of expression is that although the content of each page is relatively small, there are many pages. When talking about PPT, the pages are turned quickly.

From the perspective of the judges, they cannot integrate the content of several consecutive pages of PPT into a complete content related to a certain topic, and they may forget the front after seeing the latter.

For example, I once met a classmate. When he introduced the design plan of a certain project, the first page talked about business requirements, the second page talked about database table design, the third page talked about caching, and the fourth page talked about concurrent design. Page 5 talks about business effects, and page 6 sums it up.

Originally, there was a lot of content in 1 page, but it would be more in 6 pages. In addition, other promotion items were also written in this way. In order to finish the speech, he could only speak very fast.

In this way, it only took 3 minutes to talk about 6 pages, but the content was so much that the judges couldn't remember what he said, and they couldn't grasp the key points he wanted to say, so naturally they couldn't make an accurate decision on the plan. overall judgment.

Standard Promotion PPT Framework

Now, we've seen the common pitfalls of promotion PPTs, but knowing the pitfalls alone is not enough to write a good PPT. For example, we know that the more content for promotion PPT is not the better, but how much is appropriate to write? You definitely want to have a clear and measurable standard.

So, in the eyes of the judges, what kind of PPT is a good promotion PPT? Simply put, good content is really good. The specific requirements are as follows:

1. Clear structure: For example, use pyramid principles or mind maps to explain ideas, use timeline models to explain development processes, use architecture diagrams to explain systems, use flowcharts to explain business, and use UML class diagrams to explain codes, etc.

2. Highlight the key points: On the PPT, refine the core content into 3 to 5 points, so that the judges can quickly understand the scope of the content you want to talk about. This line of thought should be followed, whether it is the items to be discussed in general or the highlights of each item.

3. Match with the actual narration content: whatever you want to talk about, the PPT will match what you present. The most taboo thing is that the content of the talk does not match the content of the PPT.

Next, I will share the promotion PPT standard framework and writing skills that I have explored over the years for your reference.

A standard promotion PPT should consist of three parts, let's look at them one by one.

Part 1: Self-introduction

The first part is 1~2 pages of self-introduction, including three pieces of content:

The first is basic information, that is, your name, your team and business, your current level, and the level you are applying for promotion.

Normally, we are promoted through the ranks. But there are also cases of cross-level promotion, which is relatively rare in the leap-forward rank system, but in the stepped rank system, cross-level promotion within the same level is relatively common, so you have to indicate it.

The second is the current responsibilities, that is, your current main responsibilities, such as which business you are involved in or in charge of, whether you lead a team, how big the team is, and what key positions you hold (such as project leader, system owner), etc.

The third is work experience, that is, where you have stayed before and what important projects you have done. The first is the experience of the previous company, the format is:

Working time/company name/highest position

for example:

2004 ~ 2009 Senior Software Development Engineer, Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.

If you have participated in some key projects, you can also write the names of these projects, but no more than 3 items. Of course, if you change jobs frequently, the company is not well-known, and the project has no bright spots, you don’t need to write this part.

The second is the experience of the current company. If you have been in the current company for a long time and have changed several business lines in the middle, this part also needs to be written. The reference format is as follows:

Time on the job/Line of Business/Top Job/Key Projects

for example:

2010.09 ~ 2013.05 Alipay technical expert Alipay App wireless project

Part II: Readme Materials

The second part is a 10-15 page self-reporting material, which is used to show your ability to the judges.

The overall guiding ideology for writing self-reported materials is the pyramid principle. Around the central theme of "I have reached the requirements of level xx", design 3 to 5 core arguments, and each argument is divided into 4 parts: background, task, action and result. . The entire structure is like a pyramid, with a clear center, clear layers, and clear logic.

Because this part is the core content of the promotion PPT, the length is the longest, and the status is also the most important. It cannot be fully explained in two or three sentences, so I will continue to expand in the next lecture and introduce you in detail to use the pyramid principle to write self-report materials. specific method.

Part III: Auxiliary Content

The third part is 1~3 pages of auxiliary content, including two parts:

One is self-summarization, using the form of ability matrix or blocks to refine and summarize your core abilities, so that the judges have an overall impression.

It should be noted that the refinement here should echo the content mentioned above, and it cannot focus on a certain function

The result is that it cannot be seen in the summary. At the same time, it should be noted that 3 to 5 core competencies are the most suitable, and do not list 10 core competencies, so that the "core" will not be reflected.

The second is the development plan. Combining one's own development goals (for example, after being promoted from P6 to P7 this time, he still wants to continue to be promoted to P8), business development trends, and his own shortcomings, set a comprehensive development direction and path.

You may be worried that if you list your shortcomings, will the judges give you a low score? In fact, on the contrary, doing so just proves that you have a clear understanding of your abilities and have a long-term plan for career development.

On the contrary, if you didn't talk about any of your shortcomings throughout the article, the judges are likely to ask some open questions to examine whether you have a comprehensive understanding of yourself, such as "what do you think your current main shortcomings or deficiencies are?" Where is the place."

It should be noted that the list must be the shortcomings that you have thought clearly, and you can't write a few random numbers just to list the shortcomings, because the judges may actually ask questions about this part.

Another thing to note is that the ability you lack cannot be the core requirement of the target level, but should be a higher requirement, otherwise you will be slapping yourself in the face.

For example, if you are a Java server developer and apply for promotion to P7 now, then the judges will actually evaluate according to P7-, and you can see what you have not done enough in the requirements of P7 and P7+.

In this case, you can't say that you are not familiar with the basic principles and technologies of JVM garbage collection, but you can say "I hope that after being promoted to P7, I can lead a team of more than 5 people to take charge of the xx project and exercise myself management capabilities".

summary

In this lecture, I have introduced to you common misunderstandings and standard frameworks for promotion PPT. I believe that now you have learned how to present your abilities and highlights as a whole.

Now, let's revisit the key points of this lecture:

1. There are 3 common misunderstandings when writing a promotion PPT, namely, the more cool the form, the better, the more things listed, the better, and the more detailed the content, the better. These are all things we should pay attention to avoid.

2. There are three requirements for a good promotion PPT, which are clear structure, prominent focus, and matching with the actual presentation content.

3. The standard PPT framework for promotion can be divided into 3 parts, the first is 1-2 pages of self-introduction, the second is 10-15 pages of self-reporting materials, and the last is 1-3 pages of auxiliary content. Among them, the self-reporting material is the most important, and the overall writing guiding ideology is the pyramid principle.

thinking questions

Since promotion is very important to both the company and the individual, why not let the promotion write more PPTs and talk more? Isn't it possible to inspect talents more comprehensively in this way?

golden sentence

Don't pursue coolness in PPT, only good content is really cool.
