Give you a gift - make learning and scientific research from difficult problems to fun

Let me tell you good news, my new book "Five Steps to Academic Writing - How to Complete High-Quality Papers from Scratch" has recently been published by People's Posts and Telecommunications Publishing House. You can place an order on platforms such as JD.com and Dangdang.

need

Beginners in scientific research tend to underestimate the difficulty of scientific research writing. As the name suggests, scientific research results are nothing more than "code words". Scientific research results—such as journal papers, conference papers, graduation thesis, research reports, or academic monographs—can indeed be counted by the number of words, but these works are not only produced by the accumulation of code words. You need to build your own cognitive system, understand the progress and needs of your scientific research field, and obtain enough "cognitive gap" through your own research, and then output it effectively.

Some graduate students don't understand this and delay writing their dissertation until the last moment. Once they really get started, they quickly shrink back in the face of setbacks, feeling pain, torture and confusion. For the final graduation thesis, some students even finished it in tears, and then they were in a state of anxiety all day long, hoping that the defense committee and external review experts would do their best.

The saying "everything is difficult at the beginning" is also applicable to scientific research work. In fact, your postgraduate life could have been more relaxed and enjoyable. For the first time, you have a glimpse of scientific research writing methods, and you have many methods and techniques that you can learn from and apply. I write this book for you, hoping that it can relieve your troubles and pains when you start scientific research, and you will reap the results and experience happiness in the follow-up research process.

This book can be regarded as version 3.0 of my "Getting Started with Scientific Research" system tutorial. The first edition of "Comprehensive Entry Guide for Beginners in Scientific Research" was released in the form of a minority column at the end of October 2019. The second edition has been substantially supplemented, revised and updated, and in August 2022 the minority "Scrolls of Experience" series was launched, renamed "How to Get Started with Academic Essay Writing". This time, at the invitation of Mr. Zhang Yujuan, the person in charge of Zhiyuan Micro Library of People's Posts and Telecommunications Press, I once again systematically sorted out the tutorials, and added chapters such as AI for thesis writing, and finally formed this book.

When you read this book, you may wonder why the teacher seems to know the confusion I caused when I was reading, and gave the answer directly later? In fact, this is not because I have any "mind reading skills", but after the first two editions of the column were published, it has attracted a large number of readers, especially novices in scientific research. They asked all kinds of questions after the article, many of which I had never thought of. Just because these questions have troubled readers in a similar situation to yours, I simply integrated them into this book and gave them answers. This is the benefit of iterative writing - you can understand and understand user needs more and more, and keep trying to answer and solve them in better ways.

Is this book useful for beginners in scientific research? I will not list the detailed feedback data of the column here, but just tell you an example that just happened a week ago.

the case

One hot afternoon in early July, I gave a lecture. The lecture was scheduled to start at 2pm, but a boy arrived at the meeting place as early as 11am. Friends all said, "Your iron fan is here."

We had a great time talking. He said he is currently in graduate school. Since he was an undergraduate, he has subscribed to my minority column "Comprehensive Guide for Beginners in Scientific Research", and has benefited a lot from it.

I asked him what kind of help he had for scientific research after studying the column. He is very honest, saying that the specific research methods introduced in the column are mainly applicable to social science research such as information management. The various disciplines are really interlaced like mountains, and they cannot be directly used for reference. By the way, I later learned that there is a "volcano" between us - because the volcano is his research object, haha.

However, he told me very firmly that the general research method introduced in the column was very inspiring to him. In particular, the "How to get along with the tutor" part is extremely important, which is of great benefit to his academic career. He now communicates smoothly with his mentor and is often praised by his mentor. At the mention of this, he smiled broadly.

The book does go into great detail about how to get along with a mentor . I told you in the video that I have seen many "wild graduate students" who came to leave messages and ask questions. They are strangers to the mentor, and there is no way to ask the mentor questions, or even say a word. I don't want you to be in this situation. The initial stage of research is already full of challenges, without the guidance and help of a mentor, it will be even worse.

When getting along with a mentor, you should not only pay attention to civility and politeness, but also pay attention to the eight-character principle- understand empathy and communicate effectively .

"Understanding empathy" is the prerequisite for "effective communication". When you can understand the mentor's situation and know his thoughts, many misunderstandings will not arise. For example, the precautions for contacting the tutor, how to quickly grasp the basic knowledge of "tacit knowledge", what preparations need to be made when reporting to the tutor for topic selection, and how to self-check before submitting the first draft...

These contents are covered in this book, and they are explained in great detail, and the specific reasons are analyzed for you. Some people may find it trivial and hypocritical. But if you have participated in the annual (or several) Tucao conferences of the tutors, you should understand that if these details and communication are not done properly, the consequences will be very serious - ranging from being reprimanded to destroying the teacher-student relationship. There are even more extreme examples, which you may have heard from news programs.

Many tragedies could have been avoided. If you can understand the content introduced in this book earlier, you can avoid these pitfalls from the graduate stage, gain two-way trust with the teacher, and move forward for the common goal. By then, many seemingly unattainable opportunities and achievements will become within easy reach.

content

Don't get me wrong, "How to get along with your mentor" is by no means the whole book. This book introduces a variety of tools and strategies to effectively improve your scientific research writing efficiency and lay a solid foundation for your scientific research output goals.

For example, you'll learn how to apply the acclaimed "card-and-note writing method" to essay writing. Help you start painlessly, quickly accumulate materials, and easily complete the first draft. You will learn how to use literature analysis and visualization applications to scan the scientific research field to understand which literature is more worthy of in-depth reading. You will also learn how to use AI to help you read papers, and clear the "blockers" that affect the in-depth understanding of the content of the paper. From the perspective of AI writing, this book can be regarded as advancing with the times. Because there is a special chapter in it, I will discuss with you how to apply ChatGPT in essay writing  .

I believe that these methods can help you improve the efficiency of scientific research writing, reduce stress, and bring more pleasant flow experiences. But that's still not all. The book also covers scientific methods applicable to a variety of disciplines .

For example, how to find a good topic. Here is a summary of 5 different topic selection methods to help you view the topic selection strategy from the perspective of international academic experts. Another example is how to deal with when you don't understand the paper. Once the relevant experience is learned and applied, you will find that the drudgery of worrying about losing your hair will suddenly become a lot easier. For graduate students in the final year, this book also provides some practical principles and skills for your defense, so as to avoid you from stepping into common misunderstandings.

The above content is presented in "five steps" in this book, and each step occupies a chapter. They are:

  • Getting Started

  • Topics

  • Literature

  • Writing

  • Defense

There are many other contents, which will not be repeated here. Finally, there is an additional "Message" chapter, as the end of the book, the name is "Don't Be a "Wild" Graduate Student". I believe that after you read this book, this goal will not be difficult to achieve.

grateful

First of all, I would like to thank Mr. Wang Yuefen, a distinguished professor of Tianjin Normal University and dean of the Big Data Science Research Institute, for writing a recommendation for this book. Mr. Wang is a well-known expert in our information resource management discipline, and also a colleague I respect. After reading the book, Mr. Wang revised the recommendation three times carefully, hoping to reflect the characteristics of the book more fully. Once she was still thinking about her words very late, and it was almost midnight when she sent me a message, which moved me deeply. I was also encouraged and motivated by Teacher Wang's enthusiastic recommendation.

Thanks to Mr. Yang Zhiping, chairman of Anxin Mind and author of the official account of Mind Toolbox, for taking the time to write recommendations for this book. Since I joined the fourth course of "Cognitive Writing" organized by Teacher Yang in 2017, I have been trying to actively apply it in my writing, and I have benefited a lot. I feel extremely honored and delighted to be highly praised and recommended by Teacher Yang. I would like to take this opportunity to recommend to you again the new book "Smart Reader" by Teacher Yang Zhiping. I think this book is a must-read for every reader in the intelligent age of information overload.

Thanks to the founder of Minority, Lao Mai, for recommending this book. In 2019, I was able to launch the column "Comprehensive Guide for Beginners in Scientific Research" to explain the introduction of scientific research in the minority, which is inseparable from Lao Mai's repeated encouragement. It is not easy to drive a lazy person to systematically write a column. I would like to thank Lao Mai for his motivation. Facts have proved that the decision to open a column is correct. We've had a great time working together, and I've learned a lot from writing the minority column.

Thanks to Mr. Zhang Yujuan, person in charge of Zhiyuan Microbank of People's Posts and Telecommunications Publishing House, and all editors for their hard work in the process of creating, revising, reviewing and publishing this book. The moment I held the sample booklet, I sincerely admired the efficiency and rigor of the editorial team. This book is the result of the joint efforts of a professional team who really love the book industry. We hope that we will continue to cooperate happily in the future and introduce more excellent works that meet the needs of readers.

Thank you, my dear reader, for always supporting my creation. May this book bring you the joy and benefit of reading.
